The former CEO of Mozilla is launching a web browser that blocks all ads by default

Brendan Eich is making a comeback.

He's the creator of JavaScript and one of the founders of Mozilla, the organisation behind the Firefox browser, so he knows a thing or two about the web.

But in 2014, after being appointed CEO of the Mozilla Corporation, he found himself at the middle of a firestorm. Eich had donated to Proposition 8, a failed Californian ballot initiative that aimed to define marriage as between one man and one woman. When news of the donation became public, he was highly criticised, and ultimately resigned from the role.

Eich is now launching a new startup, called Brave, that aims to "fix" a problem with the modern internet — adverts.

Advertising is sick, Eich says. It's intrusive, tracking users with "cookies, tracker pixels, fingerprinting, everything," and slowing the internet down to boot — and as a result, users are increasingly turning to ad blocking software to eliminate them altogether.

Eich's solution: A new web browser that blocks all adverts by default — and then replaces them with new ones.

If the ads don't pay for content -- consumers will hit paywalls and need to subscribe to content.
  • As an advertiser this only means a lower yield.
  • As an ad publisher lower revenue.
  • As a consumer: Sorry you need to pay.

People using ad blockers should have to pay $1.00 /mo to read the news (or other valued content) websites. This could be a new (repurposed) business model like the magazine subscription sales of the pre-digital world. You might buy a package of 20 websites' content for $19.99 a month.

The will be winners and losers. Affiliates need to get creative with XML, API and affiliate made tools. Sponsors need to support these efforts if they want to retain and acquire new affiliates.

I really don't care what this guy's politics are -- he could marry a goat for all I really care. He is creating a disruptive technology in reaction to abuses by Internet advertising marketing people. The advertisers, mostly more mainstream consumer products, want the ''big data'' knowledge to make their marketing more effective.

Have you seen Firefox View => Enter Reader View with Ad Block Pro on?
This is already here ...

Unfortunately this new feature has been launched for a month. Fortunately, we've been working around them for 3 weeks ;)

My biggest problem is getting around ad fraud, bot net ad clicks and other useless hits.

Some sales do come from ads now however.

I'll make the offer I always do -- if the ads are so good -- we pay 30% to 35% revshare ...

If you have something good, why haven't you already talked to Marco? I don't sign up on adbroker's sites -- they come to us -- we spend many thousands a month -- if you need a contact get a hold of me.

Google won't totally block the browser -- their advertising (adwords) is first party content and will be displayed unless you have some information contrary. Adsense is third party and is currently blocked by most ad blockers.

Google wants the adwords clicks from any browser -- that is a primary revenue stream for Google. Even if they did block the user, there are other search engines with comparable results -- Google would just be driving customers to their competition.

If you block browsers that are blocking your ads the user will just go somewhere else for the content he is looking for. So tell me: What do you win? You just sent that visitor to your competition.
