I noticed nobody swears with 'fuck' in tv series.

Why? I watch the walking dead, and lately some Fargo. It especially became clear to me while watching Fargo since i saw the movie a couple of times... It's strange. Goddamn this, shit that, pussies and dicks... but nobody says fuck?

I always wanted Friends to have proper swearing in it. I heard the word "bastards" used once and thought how cool it would be if Chandler dropped some F bombs in there...

It's a deconstructive script writing method: pussies + dicks = fuck.

They did on a couple episodes of Always Sunny in Philadelphia. They did it on Southpark several times as well. But you're right, it's not very common.

but why? Aside from all the other swear words, heads get blown off, beaten with hammers, knifes in skulls - extreme gore. I would think that is a bit more explicit to the average viewer than someone who says 'fuck'. Plus the shows are for 'mature audiences' so with that rating one would think an adult viewer can stand some fucks being thrown around once in a while. Makes it all a bit more believable.

Not really. "Free" cable channels can say and do anything you'd see on "Pay" channels like HBO or Cinemax. They just choose not to, for one reason...

THEY WANT THAT SPONSORSHIP MONEY!

All of the questions raised here are addressed here:

Notice I said 'addressed' rather than answered.

I knew before clicking this thread that the quick easy answer is "FCC rules", that have always stated you can't say certain words on regular network tv. I would assume it's a family values issue, where a lot of people out there (not us, obviously) simply do not want to hear a bunch of swearing in every program they try and watch.

Canada has it's FCC equivalent the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council: CBSC Codes Canadian Broadcast Standards Council

Similar (but not exactly the same) rules here for most radio and regular tv networks (global, CBC, CTV)

Thank the gods for HBO/showtime/MovieCentral

Still taboo on non-pay TV.

There are no FCC rules against it, but most networks don't have balls to risk losing advertisers. It's just a word...I don't see the big deal. When they do use fuck and bleep it, viewers know what was said so it's really the same as hearing it. So they're not absolving themselves of some sin by covering the word with an annoying sound.

I'm guessing you don't know the difference between TV networks and why American TV is the way it is because you don't live in the US, and you just steal everything through torrents.

its pretty twisted that advertisers don't mind dozens of gruesome murders but think swearing is too much. says something about society i guess.

You're on the wrong side of the pond. They say it on TV over here.

On talk shows, the Americans are sometimes surprised at what can be said, and sometimes take advantage of it.

The networks have been more permissive in the last 15 years, as far as what can be said. I think NYPD Blue was the pioneer of sneaking in as much as they possibly could on prime time TV and we can thank this character for being the trailblazer.

Nothing to do with 'wrong side of the pond' - what you point out is true but it is not the point i am making.

I am also in europe and yes cursing etc is all allowed here on tv. Point is these shows are produced as Mature Audience shows with blood guts and cursing, except for the word fuck.

Doesn't matter where you live, they produced it like that so you, in Czech, won't see fuck in there as well. Because they never say it in the original, unlike movies.

If you watch the gag reels from Seasons 1 & 2 of the American version of Whose Line Is It Anyway, you can see how anal ABC was in censoring Drew Carey and his crew.

Now 20 years later, you can say butthole during a half hour sitcom.

We've come such a long way.

I get your point. Blood and Gore are great for an audience of adolescents. The word fuck isn't.

My 14 year old loves Walking dead and similar horror movies and series. But my wife tells me off for saying the word fuck.
