Try to stick to as many of these "rules" as possible:

- Try for .com
- The shorter the better.
- Easy to remember
- Easy to spell

Also, try to imagine it on a T-shirt. Does it look good? Is it crowded? Does the hot model wearing it look good in it?

The more points you can satisfy from the above, the better your domain will be.

I like to match a related and unrelated word together with some spelling tricks. These were available when I checked:

pixplum.com
fotograpes.com
poosipics.com
etc.

I find that helps create a memorable brand that you can play with in terms of logo, design, etc.

Oh... and being stoned definitely helps

Same here, maximum i paid was 1000 USD, but i only bought 3 in the last 10 years.
Many times i see a nice domain while looking for others and take it for future use.
Sometimes i just take a few days to look for domains that could become interesting.

I go to Godaddy's bulk search and type in a bunch of ideas, see what's available and if there's one I want, I go to another registrar and get it. If not, I'll try again with other ideas.

You could go to sites that sell adult domains to review them and see if any of the domains give you some word combination ideas you had not yet considered. Then try changing the words slightly to see if a close alternative is available to register.
