Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump said on Wednesday that the United States should “take the oil” in Iraq as part of the “spoils of war” and to keep it out of the hands of ISIS. “I’ve always said, shouldn’t be there, but if we’re going to get out, take the oil,” he said. “If we would have taken the oil, you wouldn’t have ISIS, because ISIS formed with the power and the wealth of that oil.”

When moderator Matt Lauer asked how, Trump said, “we would leave a certain group behind and you would take various sections where they have the oil.”

Pressed to explained exactly how the U.S. should take the oil, Trump said, "You would leave a certain group behind and take various sections where they have the oil."

He suggested that people didn't know that Iraq had a large oil reserve, and that the U.S. "got nothing" after losing thousands of lives and trillions of dollars.

"It used to be, 'To the victor belong the spoils.' Now, there was no victor there, believe me, there was no victor. But I always said, take the oil," Trump said. "One of the benefits we would have had, if we took the oil, ISIS would not have been able to take oil and use that oil to fuel themselves."

“Under the fourth Geneva Convention, when you are an occupying power, you are a caretaker, you are administering the territory,” Ms. Blank said. “The idea is to keep it as close to status quo as possible and give it back. It’s not yours to do with it what you want.”

She also said that because Iraq is a sovereign nation, the U.S. can’t simply take its natural resources.

“It’s not like this is some unclaimed land where everyone is running to grab the candy from the piñata,” she said.

Taking the oil, she said, would amount to a “Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great timeframe way of thinking about this.”

10,000 troops with all the arms and equipment to back them up. 10,000 civilians with all equipment to back them up. As a minimum. This will be paid by the US government, that's you through your taxes. The oil profits will go to the oil companies unless you really believe the US should Nationalise a section of the oil industry.
