Kmart is closing 64 stores and laying off thousands of employees

Kmart is closing 64 stores across 28 states.

Sears Holdings, which owns Sears and Kmart, informed Kmart employees of the closures on Friday, according to local news reports and employees who spoke with Business Insider.

The stores that are closing will begin liquidation sales on September 22 and close by mid-December, employees said.

Sears did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Separately on Friday, Seritage Growth Properties, a real-estate-investment trust that owns 235 Sears and Kmart stores, revealed in a filing that Sears had decided to terminate leases on 17 stores, meaning it would close those stores.

According to RBC Capital Markets analysts, all 17 closures are Kmart stores and they will close by January.

The new wave of closures follows Sears' decision to shut down nearly 80 stores - most of which were Kmart stores - in July. Moody's analysts warned last week that Kmart doesn't have enough cash or access to cash to stay in business. Kmart has about 870 stores today, down from about 1,300 in 2012.

and walmart.. K-mart never grew with the times. Walmart grew to super stores and offered groceries and a much better online experience. Even target has super targets that offer more. K-mart has never done anything to grow into the current biz models

People blame walmart and amazon for killing the family business. Truth is if mom and pop stores made more of a effort to take online sales and offered more personal services rather than sit on their ass and complain to their few customers that we use to be busy but we can't compete with big biz.. blah blah blah.

I thought liquidation and closing off stores was Sears/Kmart's business model?

I cannot remember the last time I've seen a Kmart..... We used to have one near us in Phoenix, but that was ten years ago. Even then we didn't shop there often.

If we cannot buy something from Amazon, we usually buy it from Target. We have a Target about two blocks from us.

This is strange, because I thought they went out of business years ago.

Fact : Mom and pop could never match Walmart prices.

Nobody would drive out to Walmart if they could get the same price by walking 3 blocks down their street.

fact i never said anything about price matching.. Trust me I know the local liquor store could never get a case a beer for what walmart sells them for cause the owner tells me that every time I buy a case from him (when I need one last min.).. He's one of those that is always "poor me". Now he uses that square or whatever the app is that you swipe your credit card on a tablet for cc purchases cause the fees are a fraction of the normal CC way.

Now re read what I said.. if a local mom and pop store put up a website they could sell to more people.. If they offered services that walmart doesn't offer that would also help.

I'm not saying it's not 10 times harder to run a mom and pop shop today, but it's like porn.. The people that worked 10 times harder today still make money. Maybe not like they did pre tubes but it's still possible.

There will be more closing as online shopping replaces the need to get off a sofa.
