MPs debate porn block for Twitter

Looks like the British government is trying to play God online, do you think it will happen or just political chest beating?

------

MPs have asked how new rules aimed at stopping children seeing pornographic content will affect websites such as Twitter.
The Digital Economy Bill will lead to sites that do not ask for age verification being blocked.

It received an unopposed third reading from MPs on Monday evening, meaning it is set to become law.

But John Whittingdale, the Tory MP who first tabled the bill in July, is not convinced it will solve the problem.

"One of the main ways in which young people are now exposed to pornography is through social media such as Twitter, and I do not really see that the bill will do anything to stop that happening," Mr Whittingdale said.

Twitter's rules ban the use of "pornographic or excessively violent media" in profile or header images but allow posts to contain explicit adult content.

The amount of pornographic content on the platform has grown since June, when Twitter allowed users to post videos lasting up to two minutes and 20 seconds.
Block sites

The Digital Economy Bill contains measures to bring in age verification for pornographic sites and withdraw payment services from sites that do not comply.

In the latest version of the proposed legislation, the government has given the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) new powers to enforce the rules.

Of course, this is not really anything to do with porn, the real goal is to get rid of the so-called 'fake news'

Welcome to Gnip 2.0

If the user is shown as mature content in theory this is doable.

The age access would have to come from the ISP end or the client (local device requesting that URL).

Rest assured the government will fuck this up and the user will suffer a poor "Twitter Experience." However, VPN subscriptions will boom.

It's related to porn. Nothing to do with "fake news"

Wait and see, it will become clear closer to the end, this is just the way they market their censorship plans i.e. "saving the children!"

Blocking porn sites is impossible without turning off the Internet. UK politicians must know this and have been told. What they're hoping for is this will boost their ratings and not end up making them look stupid when it fails.

What's the odds on the latter?

Utter nonsense.

This bill has taken several years to crawl through the parliamentary process.

Take your meds son, your obsessions are taking over again.

More nonsense.

Blocking adult sites (or any other type of site) is very easy indeed. The UK mobile networks have successfully done it for many years. (you need to age verify before you get the titties)

Now you might know this Paul if you actually lived in the UK rather than being a freeloading migrant. Remind me Paul - How long have you been a migrant now ?

You might also know this if you had managed to work out those new fangled "smart phones".

Can it be applied to a computer, tablet, laptop and can VPN bypass it a phone?

Or doesn't anyone but me use one of the above?

Eager to learn.

Not sure what your first sentence means - but of course AV can be applied to every type of device, and ISPs can very easily allow / block sites of their choosing.

With regards to vpn's; yes some pesky kids might get around the AV mechanisms by using a vpn, and some other pesky kids might fool the AV systems using their parents credentials, but that is not the point.

As a site owner you will have to follow the rules or see your site blocked in the Uk and your billing restricted.

So dead simple - put a simple mobile handset lookup process in place - or dont and lose your UK business. ( iTelebill.com // )

Obviously this is of no consequence to you Paul, but some peeps reading this might want to retain their customer base in the Uk. Sensible folks also see that blocking under 18's that just hog your resources and have no spending power is not all bad.

Are you following Paul ?

If a nation's government is really determined to put you out of business you need to consider other ways of making money.

I think if the UK government is really serious about this -- your customer base in the UK will just move into the undercurrents of the Internet.

With IP V6 there are so many possibilities, not being able to use DNS and FQDNs will be a handicap but real porndogs with money (digital currency) to spend will be out there. Conversion rates will be great -- traffic will not be king --that's all.

This will be very counter-productive to legitimate law enforcement needs as the content will be totally lawless with the market oriented exclusively to the consumer's demands.

Blowback is a bitch
