Around $600 leftover at every month....

How would YOU do things differently?

Pretty simple. At least until I had my student loans paid off I would buy a house that was worth about half that much cutting my mortgage and property taxes in half and I would stop giving to the college alumni. Those three things could easily free up an extra $50K a year.

trust me, it's healthy for your brain to have things tight all the time.

otherwise you'd just lay back, feel all secular , feel spoiled, get lazy and miss business opportunities , watch ur security system all day (if u have one) , and die of alzheimers .

the brain releases more chemicals when there's constant motivation and thrills in life.

If things are "tight" why would someone give $1,500/month to charity, or pay $1,000/month to basketball or piano lessons?

$700 a month is "tight"? I remember having $5 for 2 weeks once.

BMW 5 and Sienna? 3 vacations a year? Oh my heart bleeds for those poor people.

Smaller mortgage. Cheaper or fewer vacations. Smaller life insurance. No college alumni gifting like Kane said until loans are gone.

Their house is $1.5 million, which is $5k a month.

The charity is a tax write off, and if their kid's sports league is a 401c they can write that off too.

Next up is their tax rate. Figure out a way to unfuck that. Years ago I discovered my boss paid a lot less taxes than I did. Figure out how to write stuff off.

where are utilities? with cable/phone/electric/etc can easily add up to $15k+/year
health insurance? with no gov subsidies, now a days thanks to Obama can easily be $20k+/year
some misc entertainment/hobbies/etc? can easily add up to another $20k+/year
how about saving a few bucks? 10% is a good starting point so $28+k

Sounds like some terrible tax and investment planning. There's so much you can do with pre-tax money, they are just throwing it away. Keep the money in the company, and buy investment property which you can write off - at least in Canada that works.

don't fall into the general assumption (trap) of "make more , spend more"

"make more, spend less" = much smarter.

it was probably the lady in his ear telling him he needs "this , that, and the other thing".

Live a simpler lifestyle. They look like a couple who have a stick up their ass and have to put on a show of having money in order to impress their family, friends and neighbors. Have to have an expensive house in a well to do neighbor hood, expensive cars, multiple vacations, etc...

it's not as simple as that... "Birds of a feather flock together"

so in many cases if you want to make $500k/year you have to be around those that make $500k/year too... have to live in the same neigbourhood, drive same cars, be a member of same social clubs, etc...

I dunno about that nowadays.

People with money tend to live in certain places, like by the ocean, by a golf course, etc. because they enjoy a certain lifestyle.

I've not known people who've gotten rich because of their neighbors & community. Maybe a restaurant owner or someone who's company does something for the town but that's it.

And that is how we end up enslaved running just to keep still

Downsize the house and get older and cheaper cars, that would be a great start

1. They need a better CPA to get that 40% lowered.
2. They should have put 20% down on a house to avoid P&I or bought a house they "could" afford.
3. They should have waited on buying a $1.5mil house until they had student loans paid off.
4. Only take 2 vacations

Classic case of living beyond your means.

i have zero debt. havent owed a dime for over 15 years now. I drive a old reliable chevy. I take one vacation a year but its 2 months because I can. I havent worked since 1999.

how you say? Our family owns like 1/6 of all midwest farmland. Interest alone pays me over 150K a year. Oh no you say thats so little! but... no debt makes it like money coming out the ears and its for LIFE.. until I give my shares to my kids.

I dont party hardy, I dont drink I dont do drugs. Im quite boring but I dont worry about anything. Sure I could have a big fancy car but why? My car gets 36mpg. its older but reliable as hell.
i've dabbled in buying a island but its just not worth it. Family owns like 15-16 houses and us kids live rent free unless we decide to move out. We rent/lease out the rest of the lands, that alone makes 7 figures a year in income.

I do this adult as a lark since 96. I've met a good share of you. I'm the quiet one. hehe. Im also a Trump Supporter.

cut down to one vacation
get rid of those dumb ass cars and get 2 simpler ones
increase the life ins.
sell that house and downsize.

live high? then don't complain. its that simple

Oh I forgot to add my ins on my old car is 48 dollars a month. :P yes its not a girl catcher yes cops DO NOT NOTICE it at all. win win really. gold diggers, been there done that. I try hard to look like I have no cash. Once upon a time I did and all that happened was people trying to take it from me. Less is more. every single time. trust me on that. Sure I like big homes. But except for a pool all they are are wasted space. trying to impress others and psst heres a fact. There is always someone richer than you.
I realize I'm a small fish in a big pond, just on a higher scale. easy come easy go, a earthquake could open up Minn to OK and it could all be swallowed up over night. doubtfull, but it could happen.

$700 a month is "tight"? I remember having $5 for 2 weeks once.
