I had a Somolian teacher in college and her story about her own genital mutilation was the first time I'd ever heard of it, they used the cut off top of a tin can to cut her and they sew you up so the hole is so small urine can barely come out, this is to ensure a girls virginity (that's really what female genital mutilation is about). A lot of girls get constant infections. For her village they used a thistle off a branch to guage how big the pee hole will be while sewing her labia shut.
