Merlot got a bad rap from "Sideways".. I love Merlot!
After the movie came out, there was a legitimate loss in Merlot sales because it was ridiculed and made to seem uncool. Well it's delicious! Wtf, SIDEWAYS?!? I normally love Paul Giamatti, but he (his character) got it way wrong in that film :/ |

 | well, it wasnt about merlot, syrah or cabernet. it was rather more about shitty wine mass produced "without love". but you of course had to misunderstood it.... |

 | Ok, watching the movie, seems ok, but wtf, they are saying "pinot" wine as if you are supposed to know which one that is. I mean it can be white pino grigio, red pinot noir and few more. I mean it is not even all red or all white and similar, it can be either red, or white and yet they use it as it is normal. WTF? |

Pinot can be red (pinot noir), can be white (pinot grigio). Generic term is used 100% incorrectly and ignorantly.

 | Pinot has a red berry - You don't need to add the 'noir' - You need to add Grigio or Blanco when it's a white variation on the original berry - Pinot is red... |

Pinot and pinot noir? If not - my statement stands. Why would you call pinot noir and not pinot gris a "pinot"? It is like having 2 people, John Johnson and John Peterson and saying that "John" means only John Johnson and if you mean john Peterson you need to say the full name.

 | I saw that movie many years before I started drinking wine and it is the pivotal reason why I have never touched Merlot, it just stuck with me. I like a nice punchy Rioja.

Prior to watching I expected him to explain that Merlot is shit, but there was nothing like that. It even sounded like a subjective reason (could be that his ex wife drank it etc and now he hates it after divorce, just random idea to explain what I mean by him not saying that it was crapy wine) for that. So it is surprising (decline of sales due to that). On the other hand - some people are sheep, some easily influenced by others and, apparently, by the movies, so maybe not so surprising.

 | I had a few very enjoyable merlots long before Sideways came out, thus the movie not only did not phase me off merlot it kind of baffled me on that point. It did however put me onto pinot. :D Couple kinds of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc are my all time favs though. And people should quit knocking box wines. A lot of wineries these days are putting out some really decent box varieties. And hell, the convenience of 4L of wine in the fridge with a SPIGOT just can't be beat, even if it is bourgeois.
