Pro-Moscow Candidate Pulls Ahead in Czech First-Round Vote

Miloš Zeman, who proposes a referendum on leaving the EU and NATO, gains a big lead
By Drew Hinshaw and Philip Heijmans
Updated Jan. 13, 2018 10:47 a.m. ET
PRAGUE—Czechs voted in the first round of presidential elections Friday and Saturday and a world power was on the ballot: Russia.

President Miloš Zeman is seeking a second term and has cast himself as Vladimir Putin’s partner in Europe. Prague’s relationship with Moscow is “10 times” more important than with neighbors like France, he told the Russian president in November, chitchatting in Russian in front of journalists who he berated for their inability to speak the language.

This article is a good example of what is today called 'fake news'.

He never proposed any referendum on leaving EU and NATO, he has some ties to the Eastern markets especially the former Soviet Republics and China where he supports economical diplomacy and helped close several deals. So is he for example a great supporter of Israel. He also has a one of a kind humour and likes to provoke his 'non fans'.

But this hysterical article is exactly what is wrong with 'journalism' today - a complete spin that tries to come up with very one sided sensational claims and tries too hard to paint an ideological devil on the wall.

The so called 'quote' doesn't even take into account such minor detail as that France doesn't geographically have any border with Czech Republic.

Btw. since the local media do the same he will have it very difficult in the second round to keep his mandate. Being unorthodox and politically incorrect obviously gets your character assassinated these days.

It was The Wall Street Journal - Trusted newspaper

The Wall Street Journal is the largest newspaper in the United States by circulation. According to News Corp, in their June 2017 10-K Filing with the SEC, the Journal had a circulation of about 2.277 million copies (including nearly 1,270,000 digital subscriptions) as of June 2017,[2] compared with USA Today's 1.7 million.

The newspaper has won 40 Pulitzer Prizes through 2017[3] and derives its name from Wall Street in the heart of the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. The Journal has been printed continuously since its inception on July 8, 1889, by Charles Dow, Edward Jones, and Charles Bergstresser.

of course under Murdoch, they wouldn't do anything that wouldn't play along with Trumps playbook who always has been a big fan of the EU.

As far as I understand, he once used to be a progressive in the 1990ties but he turned into a drunk, rambling xenophobe.

but he knows how to appeal to the people that live outside of Prague and Brno - just look at the numbers. In Prague and Brno directly, he's only ahead by a very small margin - once you go to the villages, he's far ahead of the others.

That's the crux of our times - the number of people who only care about themselves and their personal situation is much higher than those that also care about the bigger picture.

And people like Trump, Putin, Zeman, Orban etc know how to play that

His anti-Muslim migration stance and criticism Germany for taking so many in got him more votes than he deserves. As for leaving the EU, not while they keep sending us money.

I agree about journalism being absolute shit.

And in addition to this topic, because the western establishment and media has launched their cold war part II agenda, whenever someone is critical of the EU (because it truly is a disaster for us all), is now also pro Russia according to the press. Because just being anti EU doesn't sell, and any counter arguments in favor of the EU that matter simply do not exist. So they turn to the old boogyman, and brand anyone who is anti EU all of a sudden as pro Russia. And then they go on about Russia, intentionally ignoring the topic at hand (the EU and everything that is wrong with it).

Newsflash: Most people who voted Trump did so BECAUSE of the bigger picture.
The disgusting 'experienced politicians' like Clinton, Bush and Obama (and in the EU Merkel for example) all perpetuate the same agenda of wars, deaths, destruction, migrants crises, terrorism, censorship, etc.

A quick peek at Europe now: All wars were started by your beloved 'experienced politicians', resulting in a huge migrant crisis as a result and Europe has terror attacks left and right because of these 'experienced politicians'... And you idiots still don't see it. And here comes someone who is not an 'experienced politician' and you sheep all start screaming like he is Hitler... Meanwhile the world is totally fucked up by the hands of your precious 'experienced' politicians.

Just because:
a) Trump is not a politician at all, that's why he became a president
b) he doesn't have no connections at all with the other big fishes, he is just the lonely warrior
c) he will take care of the small ones, just like the Robin Hood
d) he will help poor guys become richer, and he will make superrich just normal
e) he is an independent thinker
f) he (almost) never lies. But when he does, he does it for the GREAT purrpose. This 70-something years old billionaire has only this on his mind.
Dude you are so out of touch of reality, that is truly embarassing. Coming from one the countries that (supposedly) are in top in the world when it goes to the education system, this is once again - a real embarassement.
If you would have a pretty sister, Trump would gladly fuck her, and you would "thank him" for that. That's how he would help you
I find it funny when people put any hope in any politician at all, like they couldn't take matters in their own hands. But if that "hope" becomes naiveness and siliness, its just really embarassing.

I must be thick as shit or something. I just do not get the left wing in Britain's constant fear mongering when it comes to Russia. Will the next person to behead a British soldier in broad daylight be Russian?. Will the next suicide bombing of children at a music venue be Russian?. Will the next driver who runs over and murders tons of people be Russian?. Will the next grooming gang scandal of mass raping white children be Russian?. Even for Americans, will the next person to fly a plane into a massive building be Russian?. I see our politicians saying "the threat of Russia" and i think WTF. To not ever speak about "the threat of Muslims/Islam" is actually fucking dangerous
