Anyone Can Use a Starbucks Bathroom Now

New policy comes in the wake of Philadelphia racist fiasco

In the wake of last month’s racial bias incident, in which two black men were arrested for simply sitting down and waiting in a Philadelphia location, Starbucks plans to make some changes. Perhaps unexpectedly, clarification around the coffee chain’s bathroom policy seems to be chief among them.

This week, executive chairman Howard Schultz stated that Starbucks’ bathrooms will be open to anyone who needs to use them going forward, regardless of whether or not they’ve purchased anything. “We don't want anyone at Starbucks to feel as if we are not giving access to you to the bathroom because you are less than. We want you to be more than," Schultz told attendees at an Atlantic Council event in Washington.

The new open-door policy is an attempt to remove the pretext that ultimately led the arrests of Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson. The two were denied access to the bathroom because they weren’t paying customers, and the store’s manager called the police shortly thereafter. The two were initially arrested for trespassing, though no charges were ultimately filed.

Of course, Schultz is wary of Starbucks becoming synonymous with “free public bathroom”, but he sees the move as a necessary step to univeralize what had been a store-by-store policy that went “absolutely wrong in every way” on that day in Philadelphia.

“The first thing we want to make sure is that regardless of your station in life, the color of your skin, your sexual orientation, your gender, your ethnic background—everyone is welcome at Starbucks,” Schultz said.

The decision comes shortly after an earnings call suggested that the racist episode in Philadelphia—just one of many such regrettable incidents to make the headlines in recent weeks—won’t even affect Starbucks’ bottom line. In addition to the new bathroom policy, 8,000 Starbucks locations nationwide will also be shut down on the afternoon of May 29 for racial sensitivity training.

I learned today, coincidentally, that doctors can issue “bathroom privilege” laminated cards. They state the person is under medical care and must use the bathroom when needed. “Please allow the cardholder access to your bathroom if you don’t allow the public to use the facilities.”

It was shown on tv but I don’t remember the show.

Common decency costs money. If they let everyone use the bathroom, then they need more cleaning, more paper towels and toilet paper, more soap and more electricity and water bills.

My father had IBS and had to go when traveling. He’d stop at McDonald’s or Burger King and buy nothing usually. At fifteen I told him he was rude and to bring his own toilet paper!

They need pay toilets with paying customer getting a free pass or a quarter to use the restroom. It would cut down on theft of restroom supplies!

When my father had his business, the bathroom was downstairs and you’d pass inventory, running the lngth of the building, about one city block. He’d not let anyone use the facilities unlike he knew them well. Otherwise, merchandise would walk out with them.

I'm curious how they will handle the homeless.

Austin has a very large homeless population, they are spread out around the city but downtown you cannot walk a block without having at least one homeless person ask for money or cigarettes. Downtown is not a slum, plenty of nice areas. Starbucks all over the place. Those Starbucks will be used by the homeless. Could be difficult keeping clean and/or deter business.

I don't like using restrooms in public businesses but when my kid has really had to go money has never had to change hands. If someone told me to pay them so my kid could shit in their toilet instead of their floor I'd laugh.

Private businesses in public spaces is a social issue and I'm socially liberal.

If I owned a business off of public walkway that had to be open to the public by law during business hours all most businesses do that are open to the public, I would know that part of the cost of doing business is having a restroom open to the public and cleaning up shit off the walls from the freaks that randomly will do that.

It's called doing good business and someone has to clean those fucking bathrooms anyway.

Every single civilized city i've been in all over the world, cafes, coffeeshops and restaurants restrooms are for customers only, often they have signs saying exactly that. It is not public property. It's private property where a business is ran in, so they make the rules and it's pretty logical you don't want to make a pigsty of your toilet by making it a free for all for every bum to shit on and shoot up in. Exceptions to this are only the depressing US fastfood franchises like Mcdonalds, which have the disgusting toilets to match that policy. You cannot compare these shitty billion dollar company franchises to regular local places.

As for the particular situation you describe, any of these local places would make an exception to their rule for your kid. Why? Because you'll be dealing with humans.

I quit my Dollar General job a couple of months ago. Anybody could use the bathroom. Fairly common for drug deals to happen in there.

Footprints on the toilet seat, moved ceiling tiles, the wrap around the hoses under the sing were pulled open.

Also if the cops showed up, We would sometimes find where people stashed drugs.
