What is the Unitary Executive Theory?

It is a theory of US constitutional law holding that the President has the power to control the entire executive branch and this would obviously include the Justice Department. The doctrine is based in Article Two of the United States Constitution, which vests "the executive power" of the United States in the President.

Thus, can Trump, in theory, pardon himself?

If one embraces this theory, then the answer would be YES and there are at least three known SC Justices that do embrace this theory and would possibly rule in his favor; Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch.

Nixon used this theory when he was trying to avoid the subpoena for the tapes.

He failed, but that was then and this is now and there is no telling how this level of partisanship would effect rulings from this kind of Supreme Court.

Then there is the odious aroma from the election itself and the lack of questioning and/or legal challenge in terms of its legitimacy.

We were invaded, yet we just accept the outcome, even though that invasion influenced that outcome and worse, do nothing to protect the 2018 election cycle.

The Constitution is simply not prepared to deal with these kinds of outcomes. The framers never considered these possibilities and what to do.

Thus, what we are witnessing is a slow motion coup with the GOP providing the impetus and cover for its execution.

This will not end well!

The Democrats have been winning overwhelmingly in special elections since 2016. The Democrats also won the majority vote by 3,000,000 votes in 2016. Trump was annointed POTUS 304 electoral college votes, overriding the will of the majority of Americans voters. So the Democrats message was/is spot on with what the majority of Americans want.

Trump supporters are most comfortable with authoritarian rule. They are the same people who had to call their mommy when they were 17 to get permission to stay out past 7PM. They are uncomfortable making any type of decision on their own so they follow anyone in authority that will do the thinking for them no matter what it is. If Trump were accused of a crime and impeachment proceedings were started then he pardoned himself to get out of it (or pardoned himself to avoid the proceedings ever started) I would think enough people would be pissed that he wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting elected again.
