Do you think facebook/instagram/reddit ect killed the internet?

Before all these sites came along you didnt go to one big website to see everything.. People actually ran small personal sites even if they were on free hosts. Im not talking porn or adult, but just normal people running website about their interests or hobbies..

It was common to visit various forms like gfy for example for any topic you could think of. Now days its just some sub on reddit or a group on facebook. Added to this tens of thousands of business owners feed traffic to facebook by having ther business there and advertising their facebook page vs their own websites..

Did sites like facebook and reddit simply feed peoples lazyness or did the kill tne internet we used to have... the old wild west internet..

I take it you don't remember AOL? Most people didn't even know the internet existed outside of it. FB will be replaced eventually.

You can still do this now, but sites such as Facebook have made it easier. No need to run a site; You can just run a Facebook page or group.

With my Fireworks Committee I met a woman who runs quilt shop here in town. Obviously not someone I would normally be friends with. She doesn't have a technical bone (or fiber) in her body... But she runs a Facebook page for her business, and a group for local quilters.

Some of these big sites such as Facebook might have killed smaller sites, but instead now people use these big sites to get their message out. It's easier, and because it's easier so many more people are doing it.

If you think about it, all technology has leveled the playing field.

Take photography for example. Twenty years ago you needed to invest money into a high end camera. Now every fourteen year old kid has a better camera on their phone - and some of them can take great pictures.

It's the same thing with music. Remember when chicks would date you just based on how large your record / tape collection was? LOL. I remember lugging around huge cases with 200 CDs in my car. Now... Everyone has access to every song ever produced.

Technology keeps changing.

I just bought a printer, wireless, and set it up today. Installed it on the network and ..... every computer in the house can use it - no software needed. Amazing.

On one of Kevin Smith's podcast he was talking about how technology has democratized the entertainment industry. It used to be you had to rent a ton of expensive equipment if you wanted to make a movie or record a album/song. Now you can do it all on your phone and laptop. There was a movie recently called Tangerine that was shot entirely on an iPhone and it ended up getting a limited release and made a million dollars at the box office.

It's pretty amazing what people can do now that even 10-12 years ago wasn't possible.

Yes, but with that ease of using someone elses platform, you also lose a lot of ability to monetize it. Example I have a sub on reddit that I took over as a abandoned sub with 2k subscribers and its now at 250k subs. I had to work pretty hard with it for the 1st 10-20k sub but after that it sort of grew on its own.. yet I cant monotize that traffic on reddit. If it were a forum it would be making some pretty decent bucks from advertisers because its very niche.

Granted, I wouldn't have 250k members on a forum with out such a big platform like reddit so it's like damn if you do, damn if you dont. It's pretty much the athority site on its niche..

Now on the flip side I could jump start a brick and mortar type business from the sub, but thats not something I'm interested in.

It's a catch 22. Social media has made it easier to build these types of sites and make these types of groups and easier to grow the group size, but in exchange they get to keep most of the money.

good points to all of you. Just remember the game is changing and it's changing fast. We gotta adapt. 10 years from now everything will have involved. So remember nothing last forever, not even facebook and google.

I dont think facebook or google are going anywhere, they have become institutions. They are so powerful they have tne ability to buy up or put any threats out of business before they have a chance to do anything. Added to this now that Republicans have got their wish to kill net neutrality, it will eventually make up starts next to no threat to sites like facebook or googles empire.
