Many places in Central and South America are much more affordable than in the states and are much more fun!

Lame.

Nomads travel with a laptop only.

This was a popular sentiment in /r/digitalnomad

It seems like many people there are only interested in doing freelance writing or SEO work and surviving on making under $1000 USD while living in Chiang Mai or the absolute cheapest places on Earth.

When I first started traveling, I went a couple months with the laptop only and I was so unproductive. I even said out loud "I miss my monitors!" to my gf and she thought I was going to say "I miss my mom!". :1orglaugh

Because hardly anyone speaks English in Brazil, you must adapt. I had some private Spanish lessons 3 hours a day in Mexico City for 6 weeks. But i want more lessons, cause now i am in Asia longer time and than you forget things. And i speak Spanish Portugues, when i am in Mexico they think i am from Brazil :)

My advice, learn Spanish / Portugues, that makes travelling a lot more interesting than hanging out with only English speaking people. If you don't speak Spanish and avoid countries that use Spanish language, you miss a lot. I looked it up and Colombia and Mexico use the most 'clean' spanish. take some private lessons there.

Before i became full time traveller i already went to Brazil and South America, not speaking the language. Didn't stop me from going there, with hands, a small dictionary you can fid your way. Now it is even more simple, use a translate app. People speak in your smartphone and you see what they said. You can take a picture from the menu and Google will translate it. But i prefer speaking the language. I stayed 2 years in Brazil, hanging out with Brazilian, than you will learn automaticly. In Brazil it is best to avoid regions where are many English speaking tourist. Much much much more fun when there aren't. In Brazil i know a place with many digital nomads. I went there years before. Than it was fun, now you have the white colony of western only going with western.

I've been wanting to take some Spanish classes. I think I will look into doing so in the fall. Thanks for the info.

Google translate works well enough if I can't articulate myself sufficiently. I can simply type out a sentence in English and read it aloud Spanish or show them my phone screen. I did this the first time I joined a Gym in Cancun and needed a 1 month membership.

I've learned numbers by playing Poker with Spanish speaking players. I try to learn a few new words in Spanish per day. More touristy areas allow me to not depend on my Spanish so much, as the workers can speak better English than I do Spanish. I've only had a couple mishaps of misunderstanding. My favorite was when I said to the bartender "Hey cabron, la cuenta por favor". I thought "cabron" meant "buddy", but it means "dumbass".

I greatly dislike working without the additional monitors. I'm much more efficient with them.

Cool. Thanks for the info. I think I am going to take a few Spanish classes. I want to go to Costa Rica, Chile, and Argentina among others.

I suppose I should have titled the thread "Is anyone here running a successful online business while traveling the world and not remaining celibate?"

Hey shimmy! Honestly, the pics you posted years ago is what sparked my interest in running an internet business abroad.

Hope all is going well for you. Cheers!

If you go to Argentina look what is best with money. Just read some people complaing about the exchange rate at banks. Cash could be better. When i went there was the 'blue dollar'. That was the illegal money exchange cause USD was forbidden. 25% more pesos for the same dollar. Now there are problems again, but don't know what the procedure is now to get most for your usd/eur.

What is the best place for black latina's Shimmy?

I always find that getting cash out of the ATMs has best fees.

Most of the times yes, but when i was in Argentina that would have cost me 30% extra back than. Don't know the situation now. Even in Thailand you will save 3 - 10% when you bring cash. I do it sometimes to pay rent for a few months in advance.

Brazilian people have to pay an extra + 5% tax when they use their creditcard outside brazil. So they also bring cash many times. It all depends the country you are from and where you stay. But many times ATM is best.

"Brazil's government almost tripled a tax consumers must pay on credit-card purchases abroad to 6.38 percent. ... Gross spending by Brazilians abroad, including online retail purchases, jumped 38.5 percent in the first two months of the year to $3.1 billion, the central bank said last week.28 mrt. 2011"

I move frequently. Can't find the proper place, nor people, yet. Thought I did but, you know, they screwed it up, too. Just moved a couple of months ago and I have to move again really soon. Tired of that shit.

Using a laptop on a sandy beach is not exactly practical for several reasons.

So cool there are other nomads here! Thats how my business partner and I got into the affiliate industry. We were working remotely for a large company for a while, and travelled for over a year. Then layoffs hit, and we decided to to use our web skills to run our own sites.

We're still working on building our sites to the point where we're totally free to do this, but we're getting closer little by little. As others have said, if you're willing to rough it a bit, you can live well on not much money! It also helps to be a young person in good health with zero responsibilities :thumbsup

I'm from the U.S., but I'm currently in Mexico until mid-November.

Did you travel with 1 laptop and those 2 screens?
How big are these 2? Haven't you been questionned at the airport for them?
Are you a graphic designer or something like that? (I ask for curiosity, because of the huge screens)
I do travel with 1 laptop and 3 hardrives only.

pimpmaster9000 10-03-2018 04:39 AM

the 3 monitor + mechanical keyboard guy is the man...why work on a shitty small screen and type on a shitty laptop keyboard?

he can still take a laptop and work on the beach, nobody is stopping him...

PornDiscounts-V 10-03-2018 07:05 AM

Why have large monitors?

For me the answer is, I'm a programmer, a designer, a writer, a manager, an SEO specialist, a part owner, a developer, etc...

So I have usually 10 windows of chrome with about 4-15 tabs each. Each window is focused on one of my skill sets from above. Tabs are for employees work sheets, programming sites, developed sites, etc.

I also have Dreamweaver, Photoshop, many metapads, nifty stats, windows live writer, many putty, color cop, Excel, word, and usually 3-10 more programs running at once.

I am constantly switching from program to program it window to window of chrome. So much easier when you have screen real estate!

With an extra monitor or two I can get everything I need to do done in four hours. Without them it would be a gruelling 8+ hours. Fuck that!

My wife and I travel often, but not nearly as much as we'd like. Just waiting for the last chick to leave the nest. She's currently in her third year of college for a major in business administration with a lean towards accounting. My biggest decision will be to hire her or not. Not sure I want my family knowing what daddy does for a living.

I'll have to look into the ultra thin USB monitors rochard is using. Bulky 24" monitors aren't fun to lug around so I often don't take them.

Merida, on the Yucatan Peninsula! It's a cool place. Very safe, and great food! I almost tripped on an iguana on the way home from the gym last week, so A+!

Yeah I'm thinking I need to spring for at least one portable monitor. Right now I usually hope the place I'm renting has one - sometimes I get lucky, and sometimes I set up a dual display with a crappy television and an HDMI cable.

Kittens 10-03-2018 09:00 AM

Nice shit man, I had always wanted to be a nomad. But I got a young daughter so that's not gonna be happening.

Instead I just take plenty of vacations with her and the doggo.

Amen. I freakin' hate working off of a laptop. Kills my productivity. I need monitors, and lots of them.

Oh nice. I was in Merida which is a nice older city for a month in June 2017. It was very hot and humid, more so than Cancun and the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula. We traveled extensively through the peninsula including: Tulum, Akumal and Bacalar which were all tropical paradises.
