Star Trek: The Motion Picture is returning to theaters for its 40th anniversary

Woohoo!

The BEST Star Trek Movie ever is returning to theatres.

Quote:
The 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture is getting a limited re-release for two days only this fall via Fathom Events and Paramount, EW has learned exclusively.

The film will be presented in its original widescreen aspect ratio in more than 500 theaters and include the behind-the-scenes documentary short “The Longest Trek: Writing the Motion Picture.” The dates: Sept. 15 and 18 (tickets here).

The move comes as the film celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Motion Picture was a huge step in Trek history, reuniting the cast of The Original Series (including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Keonig, and James Doohan) for the first of many new adventures.

The film finds the original crew reuniting to guide the Enterprise on a mission to stop a destructive alien spacecraft of enormous power that’s heading toward Earth and there seems to be no way to stop it.

Among fans and critics, the lavishly produced film, directed by Robert Wise, is an oft-debated title. As EW’s Darren Franich put it in a 2016 deep-dive re-examination, the film can be slow and has story problems, yet “there are some moments in Star Trek: The Motion Picture that are so beautiful — serene, cosmic, passionately alive with the possibility of The Infinite. You want to cry, you don’t know why…

William Shatner tours the country and does a Q&A after watching the Wrath of Khan. They had one by me and I was unable to make it. Would have been fun.

He's cool. He is always at Comicon here in Montreal. He told some great stories and really had the crowd cheering. He shared the stage with Malcom McDowel as they talked about Star Trek : Generations too.

It was boring back then and it'll be boring now.

Now if it was Wrath of Khan then I'd definitely be going.

Wrath is good buts its more of an adventure movie. TMP is pure science fiction from start to finish. Both good, but both different.

Wow even though Zachary Quinto was "weird wonderful unrepeatable event" like Sheldon said, retro Star Trek versions are so better

The first Star Trek movie is a boring unwatchable shit show based on a far superior original Star Trek episode. I'd rather watch CurrentlySober take a shit than watch that mess of a movie.

You probably think that Star Trek movie (4? 5?) with the whale is great, too. Why doesn't anyone have any TASTE anymore? Why do people like garbage and think it's good when we have endless examples of true genius and artistry all around us? Sad, really.

Raise your standards people.

I dont really remember first movie content, but 4-th movie is actually pretty good. It maybe lacked usual space/sci-fi stuff, but it compensated with humor. Funniest scene in movies is when Scotty is taking mouse and trying to operate it with it by talking.

It helps to view each Star Trek movie as its own independent film, because each one has its ups and downs.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture, is beautiful to look at, has a pure science-fiction story (All "Think", no "action"), special effects by true masters of the craft, John Dykstra, Douglas Trumbull, and directed by Legend Robert Wise. On the other hand, it 1 scene of a really bad special effect, awkward acting in parts. I can easily look over the bad parts.

Wrath of Khan was by far, the most fun. Great story, great action, Great everything. Light on the science-fiction though. Khan is basically a WWII Submarine battle.

Search for Spock was OK. Good story, and first use of Computer Generated Effects.

Voyage Home was a very fun time-travel romp putting the crew of the Enterprise on the contemporary streets of San Francisco. Loved it.

The Final Frontier (Star Trek 5) was of course, the worst. Bad story, tons of goofs, bad effects, etc. Direction is actually not bad. The movie suffered from a low budget and it showed.

The Undiscovered Country is one of the best. Great story, exciting.

Generations (Kirk meets Picard) is another good one. Smart, good story, good action. Kirk's death was disappointing, but...

First Contact: I liked it too. Smart, fun, blah blah blah. I think it could have used a bigger budget as some of the sets looked weak, but otherwise good movie and important story to tell in the Star Trek Universe.

Insurrection: Terrible! Nemisis: BORING! Fucking awful movies, don't waste your time.

Star Trek 2009 was by far the best of the reboot series, and one of the best of any Star Trek movie. Great Science Fiction, Beautiful visuals, crazy action, great acting. I instantly bought all the new actors.

Into Darkness: YAWN! Just dumb, just ... I don't know... didn't like it.

Star Trek: Beyond: TERRIBLE! The worst movie in the entire franchise. Incredibly stupid from start to finish. I actually felt insulted watching this thing in the theatre.

So where was I? Oh yeah. Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Go see it in the theatre goddammit!

Well dude you certainly know your Star Trek movies. Impressive!

And after reading your list I will admit that the first film, when compared to the shit storm that was the last five or six flicks, is a fucking masterpiece. LOL Holy shit can the new Trek movies (and tv series) be any worse??

Me too. I even went to see Logans Run and Flash Gordon when Scotia Bank Theatre played them both a couple of years ago.

By myself.

I know ST:TMP has its problems... but I don't know.. I think I've seen it 25 times over the years on TV / DVD whatever... but seeing it on the big screen again is just "cool" to me. Can't wait.

Doctors prescribe Star trek: The Motion Picture when the pharmacy is out of Ambien.

Remember the one where Jim from Taxi was a Kilngon? Kirk kicked him in the head over and over while saying "I. Have had. Enough. Of you". (try to imagine a William Shatner voice)

That was from Search for Spock. Good movie, but I still like STTMP better.
