Cannabis will be bigger than adult ever was

with possibly 40 states set to legalize in some form this year cannabis is the new gold rush if you get into the right area.

The internet side of thing are exactly like porn was in 99.

I'm not sure what the internet side of that is, but perhaps my vision is limited by the somewhat restrictive laws in my state (prescription required, in person sales only, and heavily regulated).

I don't see how you can compare a regulated tangible to uploading images with banner links...

CBD still hard enough with almost no advertising channels.

So true! Be nice if at some point you could advertise a little more on the platforms without having to be a ninja. My partners and I are sitting on several 100 lbs. of high quality hemp but it seems to be an oversaturated market in Tennessee. Everyone thought it was a get rich scheme. It was a fun project though and next year we will set up more greenhouses so we can regulate everything a little more.

When cannabis is 100% legal it is going to be such a GIANT cash crop as it already is where it's legal!

It's a different market 100%, on a level playing field cannabis is more like alcohol or consumer goods vs internet porn or porn.

I don't so shit online cannabis but have been doing offline cannabis businesses for the past 8 years including partnering in Hemp, CBD, and traditional THC products. Hemp farms are still being are being raided weekly and the trap game is even stronger than before. The regulation has fucked us beyond belief in CA with new taxes, it's now 80% Wholesale -> Retail. The regulation also messed with ad regs and payment processing...

Small and middle players have been squeezed and it's now either big-money players or underground hustlers who thrive...ex. Altria (Marlboro parent) bought a stake of Chronos, a cannabis holding company for 1.8 billion and that is just one of many big-time moves out there.

The market is still good BUT earnings for the average person to get in the game and make big $ is VERY tough... porn back in the day an average person could buy or shoot some content and throw it up somewhere and $, not so easy in the weed game

Right now internet is limited to Cbd for sales and advertising and development for thc related companies. But once interstate commerce is legalized (and it will) it will change the game.

Yes your right. The barrier to entry is much higher than porn used to be. That’s a great thing to keep the bs out. But watch there will be plenty of thc related aff programs to drive traffic to in 5 years or less

Forget selling weed sell the things stoners love to buy while stoned.

It's like with the actual Gold Rush of the nineteenth century. You could either pan for gold or sell shovels to the gold miners. Guess which one was a surer bet?

How do internet professionals cash in on this? There was a panel on it at AEE last year and not one person on it had a money-making suggestion.

There are many here in Manhattan (where weed is still illegal) and unless they are money laundering fronts for illegal businesses (which some definitely are) there must be enough business to keep these places open. Rents are not cheap here.

Again people are focusing on the weed itself and not the products that support the lifestyle. The problem is, of course, a lot of 420-friendly products like grinders and bongs are one-time purchases and it's hard to get a good affiliate program for these types of products.

Instead I would look to building a 420-friendly community that also somehow monetizes the content. Like a YouTube channel.

Of course you could always upload porn videos with a cannabis watermark to tube sites and drive traffic to a site but potheads are notoriously non-horny. LOL

hmmmm

There's some that did make some money with the affiliate model but it was shut down super fast, EAZE the delivery platform was giving out $35 per order placed using their in-house affiliate system, even on trials and people were banking on it, so much they were going to concerts and passing out cards with aff codes on the back. Was short-lived but people were making bank giving out free weed in LA

Internet-side is stuck because of the regs and banking, despite state classification. It's still considered a controlled substance, so that pretty much takes everything off the table. The exception is pure CBD products but it's still a grey area. Most CBD companies have some sort of affiliate program or on larger mainstream linksharing programs but the % is very low

The other way of taking advantage of the boom still exists now which is just ancillary consulting like setting up CMS, aff programs, inventory for shops and brands and products...weed is very porn friendly and open-minded, a few people on this board and the industry do this now. Its a tough sell but can be done...one of the few industries that love people from the adult background (most of them) because of the common "fringe" industry perception

Michigan market

In Michigan - the new license fees, renewal fees, capital requirements, fee revenue to external programs -- including to the state’s health department for substance abuse programming, to the Michigan State Police for standard field sobriety testing, for police training and to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for licensing substance use disorder programs is what is stifling the industry growth and keeping the people that created the (black) market out of the legal game. Entry is priced too steep for most unless you have some big money backers.
It's still not legal federally so you have to play the local game for now. I do hope that in the next 5 years it will change as you mentioned.

Just like the general public they tend to buy the shiny new just because it's shiny and new. So I would say pushing products is the way to go currently. As more states become legal and allow home growing more and more people will buy cannabis related items online. Only makes sense seeing how the general public buys more and more stuff online vs in stores. Heck you can buy a lot of cannabis related products on amazon right now. Which is a negative because amazon loves to fuck over affiliates, pays crap, and isn't easy to compete with to say the least.

Will they find it cheaper to buy advertise space themselves or give affiliates a 10% cut?

Small to medium Affiliates days are numbered. When companies like Mindgeek to Google offer a cheaper option.

You need to find the niche like anything else. I took a page from this industry and launched a network of review sites. As an add on service to advertisers I do development, branding, marking, ad sales, design, seo, a one stop shop for anything they need in the industry.
