A medical testing company is now being told by Health Canada to stop selling a COVID-19 rapid test kit and take the product off its website.

CTV News Edmonton reporter earlier this week that SBL Testing Technology's test kit, intended for use by companies to supplement existing screening measures, was FDA-approved and seeking Class 3 medical device licensing from Health Canada.

In a written response Friday, Health Canada said "this product is not authorized for sale in Canada.

"The department will continue to follow up to confirm that the company has stopped selling and advertising the product and will consider further actions if needed."

CTV News reached back out to SBL's managing director by phone Friday.

The company declined comment at this time, though the test kit remained on its website as of Friday at 5:45 p.m.

SBL said its testing was different than standard methods, which test directly for COVID-19.

It said the kit detected two antibodies specifically produced to fight the virus five to seven days after symptoms first appeared, claiming it was more than 97 per cent accurate.

Anyone showing symptoms of the novel coronavirus will now be banned from boarding domestic flights and intercity passenger trains, the prime minister announced at a press conference Saturday.

Speaking from outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the federal government has now formalized its updated rules for domestic travel across Canada.

“As of Monday at noon, people showing any signs whatsoever of COVID-19 will be denied boarding at all domestic flights and intercity passenger trains.”

His announcement came during an update on Canada’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday Trudeau announced the federal wage subsidy for small and medium-sized businesses affected by the COVID-19 outbreak would be jumping up to 75 per cent. Trudeau had previously announced a 10 per cent wage subsidy, but conceded that it wasn’t enough.

“It’s becoming clear that we need to do more — much more — so we’re bringing that percentage up to 75 per cent for qualifying businesses,” Trudeau told reporters. “This means people will continue to be paid even though their employers have to slow down or stop their businesses.”


Meanwhile on Friday, Canada’s deputy chief public health officer said Canada’s fight with COVID-19 is far from over, and that it could include a second wave.

Dr. Howard Njoo said Canada is in it “for the long haul.”

“It’s definitely months. Many months,” Njoo estimated Friday as the number of novel coronavirus cases in Canada surged.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), as of 6 p.m. ET on Friday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Canada had topped 4,600.

The PHAC said more than 170,600 Canadians have been tested for the virus.

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) also offered an update on Friday, saying four flights repatriating citizens from Ecuador, Peru, Guatemala and El Salvador were set to arrive in Canada.

A 101-year-old man in Spain has been released from hospital confinement after recovering from COVID-19. This was reported by the Italian city of Rimini deputy mayor, Gloria Lisi. The old man, only identified as "Mr. P.," was admitted last week to a Rimini hospital in northeast Italy, after he was tested positive for the pandemic the world is currently suffering from.

He was released from confinement on Thursday. In addition, the mayor said, this was "truly extraordinary" and that such a recovery from a man, more than a hundred years old, would give "hope for the future." The city head also expressed how an old man has instilled in people that "even at 101 years, the future is not written."

This old man was born in 1919, the same period of the Spanish Flu, the pandemic that killed approximately 30 to 50 million people globally. He grew up between World War I and WWII and now, he turned out to be the oldest patient to recover from COVID-19 in Italy.

This was reported recently by the Italian media. Incidentally, this most recent pandemic is not new to Mr. P. As mentioned, he was born in 1919, the same period when the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic was inflicting his town. During that time, the said pandemic took an approximated number of "600,000 Italian," but he was spared.

A Century Later
After 100 years, Mr. P. would find himself confined in a hospital, seemingly, returning to where he started then. After his hospital confinement, the health workers were rather hopeless as COVID-19 would hit people more than 65 years old the hardest.

Although Lisi said, once the oldest patient started to recover fast, he turned out to be the story every person in the hospital would like to talk about. The deputy-mayor added, "Everyone saw hope for the future" of the whole world in a-hundred-and-one-year-old person's recovery.

Upon his recovery, the Spanish Flu and WWII survivor was released from the hospital. And, as Lisi strikingly explained, Mr. P's family took him home the night before, as mentioned, to teach everyone a lesson that even at more than a hundred years, the future has "yet to be written."
