Who here still changes their own oil?
I use Amsoil 0w-40. I also put in a magnetic drain plug and a magnetic wrap around my oil filter. It works fantastic. Always go the extra mile with your oil and filter!

Not me, the most valuable skill my father taught me is that you can pay people with valuable skills to do them.

Technically i should but when it comes to my car i'd put more faith in the mechanic i've known for years to do those jobs than myself...

Personally, I quit.
When I was younger, broker and only owned one vehicle I did. Now I own a fleet of roadside service vehicles and various personal vehicles in my household. Fuck all that. Mechanic on the payroll keeps it all good. Even if I got out of the roadside service industry and just kept personal vehicles, I ain't doing it no more. Jiffy lube got me. |

...You just put an oil drain thing under the pan, unscrew the bold, smoke a bong while it's draining, unscrew the filter and screw in the new one, screw in the bolt, then fill it up with oil. It's the easiest car maintenance that you can do.
For the money you save, you can get a bag of weed for the whole week. (Or like a day if you're me..)

Does magnetic wrap for oil filter really help?
BTW - magnetic oil plug is really good indicator if there are troubles with an engine, having that for 3 years and really satisfied!

I service our 4 cars myself. Did brake pads and a fluid flush yesterday to get ready for a track day this week.
To the "pay someone, use a mechanic" people... Fuck you, I enjoy it. I don't need to stare at my computer to make money, having hobbies like this keeps me from becoming a drug addict. Doesn't help that all the good shops in my area have 4-6 week waiting lists. |

You can if you're creative enough. I couldn't put power steering fluid in my VW once because it was dealership only, but found a way to rig a pump bottle to do it.
Also, I thought I had to take my VW to a dealer to get an oil change before, but it was just a big plastic thing that I had to remove to get to the filter.

I do not. For $40 a local car wash does it, replaces my air filter, and details my car. Can't beat that.

Yes, I cut one open and there were tiny particles on the filter housing. It traps the ferrous metal that fits through the filter. I’ll find a link to what I use.

I would too, but my oil is so expensive and no garage carries it. So I’d have to purchase my own and bring it there, and they still charge the same price. Also a good time to lube the chassis bushings and hit the ball joints with the grease gun.
Most mechanics are good, but none will treat your car the way you will. I learned that the hard way |

I'm disappointed in anyone who doesn't at least know how to change their own oil, tire, sparkplugs, or batterie.

Well, even tho I love engines and fixing stuff, changing oil or break pads is not my world. I have a very good friend of mine who is available almost 24/7 and he does everything for me when necessary. It's about a Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro.

I take that back, I did change oil on my son's BMW 2 months ago. It wasn't bad at all. Oil filter was on top of the engine.

Nope. I have a c63s, they designed the oil plug to be once use... so it has to be replaced everytime.

The naturally aspirated m3, I think mine was a 2011, was a pretty friendly car to work on. The recommend oil intervals are 10k miles. That’s insane.

I never done it with my cars.
If out of warranty, what i usually do is buy all the materials needed, bring it to my favorite shop and they do all the hard work for me while I carefully watch them. |

I've actually started working on my own cars again after 20 years of just taking them to the dealer etc. I hate making appointments, waiting in line and shit, often having them fuck it up and taking it back again. Get a nice sense of accomplishment doing it yourself too. I just did an engine swap in my garage as well
