NameSilo Domain Resolving Issues

Has anyone else that uses NameSilo to register domain names noticed that DNS resolving has been taking longer than normal the past few weeks and, while waiting for the domain to resolve to new nameservers, they're throwing up a landing page with PPC ads on it?

It literally used to take all of 5 minutes for a new name to be fully resolved and functional but as of late, it seems to be taking a good 12-24 hours, meanwhile they throw up a PPC landing page, I guess to monetize any possible type-in traffic the domain may get once registered, albeit a minimal amount I'm sure.

Given how inept they've become since they were sold a few years back I wouldn't put anything past them - I went there recently, logged out, and there seemed to be some other customer's name, address and phone exposed on the main page - but this sounds more like malware or a change in policy at the DNS server you're using. If it really is a new Name Silo idea then it's the final nail in the coffin for what used to be probably the best registrar.

I stopped using them a while ago, but for new registrations you could set the name servers when you were registering, so they were established immediately (a good system not employed at most/all other places). This may not stop the issue you're talking about though, if it simply applies to any new reg.

Edit: Do you have a screenshot of the PPC landing pages? Or even better source code.

Ah okay. That's scuzzy but not that unusual for registrars. I think Porkbun doesn't do it, but I wouldn't see it with ad blocking anyway.

As to why it's not updating immediately, I've found that while .COM names update instantly, .ORG and maybe other non-.COM extensions don't, so if the names are not .COM, it's probably just that. Otherwise it could be HTTP/HTTPS issues, local caching or a change by whatever DNS server is being used (unlikely, since it's probably 8.8.8.8).

I've just checked Namesilo and it seems that with their abortion of a UI it's no longer possible to set the name servers during domain registration, so in future change the DNS records (A, CNAME, etc) while the nameservers are still Namesilo's, before changing the nameservers to something else (if it's Cloudflare, this should also mean CF picks them the DNS entries automatically).

Any DNS servers still querying Namesilo should get those new DNS records and not the parking page crap.
