Way back in the 70's people were converting cars to hydrogen. They had a lot of extra weight because there were some stones they had to have in the tank to keep the hydrogen stable.

Not sure of all my science on that, going from memory of articles in Mother Earth News.

Edited in: Here is an article from 1979 talking about hydrogen production and storage for personal usage.

Will be interesting to find a current article to see how it has changed. I know that they have had fuel cells for about 20 years now.

The infrastructure is apparently horrible.

It seems that hydrogen gas is made by electrolysis of water. Separation of H2 and O.

I wonder if this would be bad. Using water for fuel, where water could be wasted?

Yeah, but when you burn Hydrogen in an Oxygen atmosphere you get water, the binding of the H2 and the O.

So, theoretically, you could recapture some of the water coming out from the exhaust and recycle it into another electrolysis reaction. Unfortunately, running an electrolysis reaction in the automobile itself is not very efficient.

As of 2017, for large scale hydrogen extraction:

Quote:
Very roughly, a new electrolysis plant today delivers energy efficiency of around 80%. That is, the energy value of the hydrogen produced is about 80% of the electricity used to split the water molecule. Steam reforming is around 65% efficient.

They are also talking about large scale conversion to make hydrogen, which would be used to replace natural gas at electric generating stations. The electricity used to make the hydrogen would come from that period of the day when there there is more electrcity being generated than is needed (e.g. at 1 pm when solar panels are maxed), and then burned at night when generation is required due to lack of solar. The system essentially is an energy storage system, without some some of the hazards of a utility scale battery (chemical explosion hazard, need for rare earth materials, battery disposal concerns).

When judging pros and cons between ANY product that I am not in the least familiar with, is to simply find out...

Will it be easy for me to steal?

Then, dependant upon my findings, I will be for or against it.
