:2cents Anyone tried flipping furniture on CL?

A buddy of mine was just telling me about his plans for a business next year, he's going to be renting a small warehouse space and filling it with furniture he buys cheap or gets for free from Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist, cleaning it up, then selling it at a significantly higher price than he paid for it.

Does that type of shit actually work?

He seems to be thinking he'll be making a few grand a month doing this as a 'sidehustle'.

Any of you folks done this? It just seems like a total scam

Always very popular, second hand stores.
Now they call it "circular economy".
Also many subsidized jobs in those businesses.

Or get the furniture out of houses when people die.
Many times family is happy people taking it.

A little more recession and will even get better.

A profitable line of business for decades... and longer
A good bargain always sells!
It is anything but a scam in tough economic times more a necessity...

Interesting, I wouldnt have thought that type of stuff would do well personally, although to be fair, its rare I'll buy anything used (cars, boats, etc is about it).

Unless he has a store, it will be hard to get retail prices. Home staging is probably more lucrative and can be operated without having a storefront.

As a caveat to what Tasty1 said about buying furniture from the deceased, don't buy furniture that belonged to someone who died in the house and at any price. The horrible stench from a decaying corpse will permeate porous materials.

Yes, not when people died at home and stayed there long time
But most die in hospital. And most family members already have beds, ovens, furniture.

You don't need an a-location. Cheap location is most important.
In a cheap neighbourhood.

In Holland it is called "Kringloop Winkel" = "Recycle Store" and almost every city has one.

And always people hoping to find some antiques.

https://www.google.nl/search?q=kringloop+winkel

Actually, it was a Kringloopwinkel in holland shat started the first free classifieds ads site.
It is now in the hands of Ebay.

My mother ran an antique store from doing exactly the same thing. She would go to garage sales, yard sales, estate sales and she knew what to look for. She was good at getting them to take the lowest dollar and then refurbished it and sold for a profit.

She made quite a good income doing that, but it was a lot of heavy lifting, mostly for me.

Flipping furniture is huge. Buy a crappy couch for $100, clean it up, sell it for $500. You don't need a store front to do it either.

I used to do this when I had a truck.

The best part is people give stuff away for free. One time someone was giving away an Adirondack chair. I power washed it, tightened up the screws, then painted it white. Sold it for $150. Another time someone was giving away two bar stools. They were all black so I tightened up the screws and used a black magic marker to touch them up, sold them for $50 the same day.
