Whats interesting actually about the HK XM8 is that it seems the Military is intent to sticking with 5.56MM.

At least thats a little more conservative than past rifles using 7.62.

Ammo is cheaper!

If I was in a situation where I was trying to kill someone who was trying to kill me, I'd prefer the 7.62, just because it has more dropping power, which is always handy

You like the range of 7.62, not the dropping power
Ya got alot more range with 7.62 and anyone knows in a close quarter fire fight anything goes so 5.56 ya get more rounds to fire.

5.56 still has the near same result of 7.62. Both induce enough Hydro trauma to knock a person unconscious even if shot in the ankle.

Safest situations are always at a range with the advantage of surprise. Trust me. You like the range
