AOL Scam

I signed up for AOL last weekend( Saturday) and they sent me some how to book I remember signing up for aol and clicking no to the pop up that asked if I wanted the book . Then a few hours latter I checked the billing part on my account and it said I was being billed for the book so I emailed them back saying I didn't want it . Then on Sunday I get a e-mail from them saying they had processed it already and that I could send it back if I didn't want it and a full refund would be credited to my cc . Then when I took it to the post office to send it back The lady said they were getting a lot of the books going back . Anybody else experience this ?

No, I can't imagine to many webmasters having aol accounts. When you could goto netzero.net and get online access for FREE!
I'm curious why you choose to signup with AOL?

please let me know

I chose Aol Because where I was my local provider did not have a local # and I had a disk for free minutes so I set it up ! Secound of all who the hell wants to be bothered with slow connection speed and advertisement with net zero and constantly being disconected after 15 minutes ! But then again you get what you pay for !

Hotshot, true you do get what you pay for. I think they have something new, called Plantium service for $9.95, doesn't sound bad.. They are sure spending alot of money to advertising during the NBA playoffs.

go lakers!

aol is very user friendly. A very organized structure if you are a beginner on the internet.

Independent dial-up for 8.95 month, since they host several of our straight sites, we get that and dsl free. lmao

56k constant 49,333 on the dial-up

We dropped their dsl and went to our reseller brand tho awhile back.

AOLHell sux wind. Did them for a year in 95. YUCK!

Hey AOL gave us an extra free 6 mos trying to convince us to stay tho. Unlimited with no boot offs. lmao First time we ever stayed connected 24/7. We were online maybe 3 hrs a day but why have to wait to dial in when it would stay on! lmao

Kat,

Shame I have an ex-Cable and Wireless phone line and cable television. Since NTL took over they haven't made the cable modem service available in my area. One of those "coming soon" deals that never happens...

my sympathies old chap - i kept their original email from march last year telling me i was getting free internet (it was 1p a minute back then - £80 a month!) and sent them hate email attaching their email and visited there customer service in town with a printout - it took 6 months to get it eventually.
Have you tried lineone?

AOL gets on my nerves...I don't know why, but everytime I see a commercial or everytime a signed on when I had it back when, it just annoyed the shit out of me LOL. Besides with DSL, it's not worth having, just an extra expense.

Boy, but I do so love AOL surfers. Bunch of newbie porn lovers as far as I can tell And, if I let my son surf unsupervised, I would probably feel a little safer with him using AOL. At least they TRY to keep it clean.

hottshot,

Dont deal with AOL. They built their empire on scamming people. I got charged $200 on my phone bill for calling an 800 number. They are a total scam. I got visa to give the money back. Just dont fuck with AOL. And dont fucking pay your CC for that book.

Peace,
Pete Dogg

if u used their 800 # to connect then its pretty stupid on your part to dial in w/o reading the terms... or the banner that pops up once u connect on the 800#..

I use AOL for me email and chatting (my parents have had this for a few years now..), however I myself use a local dialup for $10 a month so AOL and my parents can't see what sites I'm visiting (aol has all kinds of tracking and shit if you use their browser or connect to the net through their server).

AOL I hate but oh well...

aprilkova,

You're damn right... annoys me too. but it's the only way that I can get unmetered internet access! All the other companies are... shall we say... even shadier than AOL. At least AOL are reachable.

The thing that annoys me most though, that fucking "Connie". Everytime I log on, I get "Welcome.......................................... ..... to AOL" and when I log off I get "goodbye, goodbye". It pisses me off... in fact, I think I'll replace the .wav files with Joe Pesci sound clips, or better yet... DarkJedi's sound file of him barking like a dog.

Kat,
I've been with Line One in the past, you know how they give free software and Amazon gift vouchers everytime you sign up? Lol... I'm an adult webmaster's worst nightmare, I'm the original tight ass. I think I've signed up my entire family twice over, even my grandma is a Lineone member.

Not seen there recent deals though - might be worth me checking them out. Thanks for the tip

kat , I haven't tried line one I'm currently using softcom.net I've been using them for the past 5 years and they have grown since then with # all over the west coast . there pretty good they don't track you so they claim and pretty reasonable . I was out in bum fucked Egypt and AOL was the only one that had a local access # so I figured I'd give them a try But never again they suck

ace0r*,
I know your not calling me stupid.
You're just not informed.
I used AOL 5 years ago, before they had fine print that says you will get charged.
They put that in there because so many people were charging back there CC bills.
And that was before pop up windows as well my friend.

There have been many magazine articles written about the scam AOL used to run. And it looks like this book thing is a new scam of theirs.

My advice is dont give your credit card to AOL.

Peace,
Pete Dogg

AOL have very aggressive charging proccess..

they always give you that free shit and then offer to give you additonal free month and so on and on..and still you get billed..

my advice to you is when you cancel make sure you get that persons name and number and the cancellation number..don't just hang up without that info..

and you thought porn billing is bad

Simple way to fix that continued charging. When you call and cancel, make the next call to your cc and tell them to refuse any more charges from whomever or it will result in an immediate chargeback. Most cc companies will do it really quick since 1) it's in the laws for most states and 2) they hate to deal with the chargeback. lol It just ends up costing them profit when it's simpler to enter a refuse to their system.

I've been online since AOL boasted 1.5 million users. We signed up with our 14.4k modem and accidently left it connected a few nights. They used to charge by the hour back then, It's like getting a huge bandwidth bill. Your eyes almost pop out of your head.

FUCK THAT!!!!!
We dropped AOL the next month, and have been with earthlink ever since. We've been happy with their DSL service so far.

If only I had become an adult webmaster back then... live and learn I guess.
