Memories of the Twin Towers
I don't have a whole lot of story to tell on this one, being from central Canada and all, trips to NYC are not an everyday occurence for us. But back in 1976 I was with my parents in Montreal for the Olympics, I was thirteen at the time. My dad worked for the CBC and was on one of the camera crews covering the games. Maybe a week after the Closing ceremonies, we took a drive down to NYC to see some sites. My dad, during wwII was in the merchant marines, and his ship put into many ports all over the world during that time, including NYC. It was no doubt interesting for him to see some of the changes over the previous 30+ years since. The World Trade Center was one such change.
We spent about a week there, at a hotel on Palisades Parkway just outside the city. One day, after we had taken the ferry to Liberty Island and climbed up the long winding staircase to the crown, we looked out over the NY skyline, it was aproximately 3 in the afternoon, and of course the twin towers dominated the view. After getting back off the ferry, we headed to the top of one of the towers, and I'll never forget the elevator ride up, my ears popped from the rapid rise in elevation just like when a plane takes off. People were passing out gum to remedy that. I'll never forget coming out of the elevator and climbing those stairs up to the viewing platform on top. It was absolutely incredible, the sky was clear and sunny, and it looked as if you could see all the way to California from there. The actual curve of the Earth on the horizon had a lasting impact on me, and I think I could have stood up there and studied the view of that famous city for days if they had let me. I remember the chit-chat amongst the other onlookers, and my dad as well, about how if one were to drop a penny over the side, by the time it reached ground level it would pass through a person like a bullet. I would later think back to that moment with regard to the 1976 version of the King-Kong movie, and how these towers I had stood on played a major role. I'll never forget that visit to the lower Manhattan, and now I'll have to treasure these memories even more, for that is all I'll ever have. Because of a handful of sick and dimented individuals I'll never have the opportunity to relive the experience, or share it with any child I may have one day. A trip to the big apple will always be special and awe-inspiring to someone like me being from way up here in winterville, but it will never be the same without the Twin Towers included. They live only in my memories now, and I'm grateful that I at least had the chance to see them and experience them first-hand. I know many won't ever get that chance, and for that I am truly sorry. Thanks for reading, and by all means please share your own memories if you so desire. I would love to read them. ___________ CD ![]() - Grab the banner.... Link it to: http://paydirect.yahoo.com/PD/onePag...sMoney-drv.pd/ |

I remember this like one time when these guys flew commercial jet liners into each of the towers...that was a trip.

I'm sorry, maybe I'm too premature with this thread. I know it would take a bit more typing than some of you are used to, but if any of you have any memories of good times involving these amazing buildings that once were, please share. If you can get past your bitterness about this horrible event for a few moments and remember, maybe it will be worth it for you.
I just feel like remembering the good, just for a few minutes. I know some of you have some fond memories. When you're ready, take a moment to share them. Thanks. CD. |

I am curious if they will make where the twin towers once stood into a memorial as they did with the okla city building. I think they should. So many lives lost.

I wondered that myself. Part of me would like to see a new modern structure put back up there that would be comparable to the WTC, but then part of me thinks of those that didn't make it, and there should be some sort of memorial there.
Maybe they can find a way to accomplish both. A new world trade center built to a proud height to show the world that nothing can topple freedom, and incorporate a memorial theme into the complex. Thoughts? CD. |

I never have been in USA. But of the few places I wish to visit, the twin WTC towers would be one of my first choices. I'm very confused since that everything happened. I don't know accurately what I am feeling. I don't stop thinking about this. |

I remember something else about my trip to lower Manhattan....
After my parents and I got down to the ground floor, we asked around about where we could get something to eat for dinner. The few people we spoke to said that the only place in the area that would be open and also a really good place to go was a little place called "Wolfe's" We found the place, I think it was on Wall street, and they were soon going to close. it was near to 6 oclock, and they staff at Wolfe's said that everyone in the area usually get's the hell out of the area before it get's dark. They had the grill shut down, so they made us soup and sandwiches, and while we were waiting we looked out the window. I watched shop-owners pulling huge iron girders over the front of their stores, then scurrying like maniacs to get to the subways and get out of the area. It really made us think about life in Winnipeg, where it's just not like that. It really amazed us to watch the shop-keepers and businessmen/women literally running, "no time to talk", trying to make the subway before dark. So, does anyone know of "Wolfe's", and if so, would it still be there on Wall street? I remember the food they made for us was damn good, sandwiches were huge. Damn, it sickens me to think of that area all messed up like that. CD. |

When they do rebuild it should be one Mean Ass Tower about 6 times in size in diameter so that it will never be able to be penitrated like this last event! Maybe like a nice octagon deal made out of some tough ass composites that would make it the stongest building on the planet would be nice.. would cost a fortune.$$$$$$$ |

Amp --- you ever been to the WTC?
As for your banner, nice job man, very nice. Why not link it to one of the donation pages? Just go to http://www.yahoo.com/ and take your pick, they have about 4 good links at the top of the page for donations. CD. |

So, absolutely NONE of you have ever been to the World Trade Center other than the few who've posted here?
you've gotta be kidding. C'mon, take a minute and let everyone know what these buildings meant to you, what good times you may have had, what was the impression you were left with. For me the experience was awe-inspiring. How about you? Or are we too busy arguing about race and politically correctness to share some memories. CD. I, too, was incredibly sad when I first heard of the attacks, in part because I would never be able to take my children up there. |

Wow, we missed each other by about 3 months.
Ya, the whole experience of lower Manhattan was amazing for me. Anyone else been there? |

Yes it's still there, only I think it's a Catering Hall now, & I also think it's on West Street, not Wall Street.

I was in NYC a year ago, spent a whole week in the city, mostly attending the US Open (the biggest tennis tournament in the world after Wimbledon).
I had the opportunity to visit most of the popular sights: Guggenheim Museum, Empire State, Brooklyn Bridge, Metropolitan and Natural History Museums, Main Square, St. Patrick Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, Wall Street, Statue of Liberty.. and more I can't remember at this point. It was soooo wonderful. There's definetly no other city in the world like NY. If I go back, and I intend to.. I'll attend a broadway play and enter a sex shop haha.. oh, and visit the Museum of Modern Art.. funny, but we completely forgot to include it in the schedule ![]() As for the Twin Towers, I still remember everything about them.. from the small cozy square in front of them to the elevator ride. I took dozens of black and white photos and these are the ones I liked most. I will always treasure them and feel very fortunate to be one of those who had the oportunity to visit such an imposing and beautiful building. I also keep a couple of coins as souvenirs.. you know, those little machines that will take a couple of 25 cents and a penny and print an image on it? ![]() [This message has been edited by gaby (edited 09-16-2001).] |

One other thing I remember about our visit to NY was that my mom was afraid of heights. She absolutely would not go beyone the base of the pedestal at the Statue of Liberty, she accompanied my dad and me up to the 6th floor, and since it was winding stairs from then on, she opted to wait down at the bottom for us. As it turned out, some guy tried to pick her up as we were up in the crown
![]() But once we were atop the WTC tower, my mom was pretty white in the face, yet she did go all the way up with us. Talk about facing your fear!! She stayed near the door to the stairway though, and would go no further, her fear of heights was pretty severe. I still gotta hand it to her though. |

Of course, that big "middle finger" building would be facing Mecca
![]() Damn, I'm sure all the latest human technology for building sky-scrapers will go into whatever they build there. I'm hearing talk that the buildings won't actually be all that tall, but I sort of hope that they are very tall. Part of me would very much like to see something very striking and monumental there to replace the twin towers. That site should never show anything humble, it should be tall and proud like the freedom we've come to know and appreciate. Let the rest of the world tremble and shake to make them know how much we value that freedom. |
