Anyone had a personal trainer to get back in shape?

I'm considering doing this now, but hearing good and bad things.

Anyone hired one of these guys and what were your results?

Go to bodybuilding.com and get a workout yourself. Trainers are not good unless they are paid a lot be your own trainer.

I had one for 2 weeks, I hated the guy. He asked me all kinds of questions about my sleeping, habits eating habits etc. He asked me what I ate for breakfast... FRUIT LOOPS... the guy flipped out like I was Hitler himself. Told him I smoke half a pack a day and the guy was practically in tears. If you take on a trainer, be prepared to give up a lot of choices, what you eat, when you go to bed, etc. Unless this guy was just some nut case.... thats my experience with a personal trainer and I said fuck it, I'd rather die 10 years earlier.

Yes, I have had a female trainer for the past few years and it keeps me motivated.

Plus, at the end of each workout she stretches me in all sorts of interesting positions

Could not be Happier. I go 3 days a week.. about an hour and a half workout. Major diet.

I am sore everyday but it is worth every bit of the pain. I would not be working out with out them. I am doing things I do not remember doing since highschool.

I lost 31 lbs so far and I am still very dedicated.

Ya should've asked me on ICQ

If you can afford a good personal trainer (which no doubt you can), it will be worth it if the personal trainer is good. As described above by sean, there are some personal trainers who aren't exactly up to par.

A good personal trainer will make the transition from your current lifestyle to a more healthy lifestyle as easy as possible, and practically unnoticable. He/she will work with you, and not against you when it comes to preparing a diet. A healthy diet doesn't have to suck, it can be very good - but everyone has their own preferences and it's a matter of evaluating by trial and error what it is that will work for you, your budget, and your schedule.

Yeh, I heard a lot of them are control freaks and give you shit if you deviate off their guidance for lifestyle changes.

Hire a babe. Training is all the same. You just need to show up and do it. The babe makes it easier to do that. I ended up going out with her but it was fun as hell while it lasted.

I tried that. Joined two health clubs and just got burned out going to those places everyday. The men's locker rooms grossed me out and reaked of sweat and stink.

I am at 24 Hour Fitness.
They charge $300 for 6 sessions.
I do 6 sessions in 2 weeks, then go on for 2 months by myself.
Then I take another 2 weeks of trainers, and so on.

It's definitely worth it, if you find a GOOD one... I'm not talking the morons at 24 hour fitness trying to meet quotas.

Find someone that has competed or has done fitness modeling, someone that knows nutrition and has a degree in the field. Almost anyone can get certified to be a personal trainer, it's a simple take home test!

Even if you don't stay with the trainer, the things you will learn the first 3-6 months are extremely valuable... nutritional information, workout tips (form, overtraining, types of cardio) are all worth it.

Plus there's that APPOINTMENT that help people get over procrastination (since they have no choice!).

90% of people that think they "eat good" eat like shit, everyone neglects learning proper nutrition and just hits the gym. Physique transformations don't happen in the gym... as hard as it is to believe weight training and cardio amount to about 30% of a transformation.

I know several personal trainers, hit me up if you have any other questions, I'd be glad to help!

well, i have been with a personal trainer for 10 months now.. i gained a good chunk of muscles.. choose someone who will teach you how to train and not someone to give you suplement tips.. get a guy who is graduated in physical education and is postgraduated in musculation and so on...

I've had two - one girl and one guy. The chick almost killed me and the guy hit on me, but what the heck - they were both really good! Go for it if you're thinking about it! It was killer motivation and I always had awesome workouts.

the great thing about the body is that you can be with a shitty trainer, and almost every time if you stick to it, you will lose fat and build muscle the first 3 to 6 months - it's the law of disuse. it's kind of like sex -- at first it is great, but as the relationship progresses, that satisfaction is harder to come by - and different approaches must be made.

the amount of physical strain it receives at first, regardless of what it is - will force it to change for the better.

I wish the trainer I had was a hot chick, it would have been a lot easier. I kinda feel gay about a guy touchng me in my mid section and outlining my legs telling me where I need definition.

Well, I would look into getting a food expert to plan your meals and snacks out first based on your lyfestyle. You would also need to have someone who stocks your house with healthy foods and meals daily/weekly.

IMO it's best for you to plan out your own training, based on your needs and time schedual.

I wake up very late in the afternoon, and go to bed early in the morning, so it's not exactly easy to work on what others think is best for you. You could allways get someone to advise you though.

I hired one last year during rugby. I loved every second of it. I talked them down to just 10 dollars a session. I rode my bike 25 mins to the gym and it also helped.

Ask for someone to kick your ass for one hour with only 30 second in between reps. This will kill you for two weeks till your body gets used to it.

KRL, if you are in florida, one of my friends is a fitness trainer in south beach, it's worth it to get a good routine. Once you know how to eat right, and do a couple of routines for different muscle groups you can go by yourself to the gym and do it. If you need his contact info let me know.

need motivation?

we're in similar ages/stages of life (minus the financial status)...

think of your boy wanting to go to park or beach and you not being able (physically) to go with him...how sad would that be?

do you want to live a long happy life and to enjoy the many phases of your kid's life? do you want to be a healthy grandfather to his children? or be around to see them?

those self questions have caused me to make dramatic changes in my lifestyle and diet....hopefully you can come up with similiar powerful questions to ask yourself to make the action happen...

no outside intervention is a be-all/end-all to producing the results you want....

it's an inside job

I have a couple of people that I work with training at the world famous Gleason's Gym in Philadelphia right now. Let me tell you this KRL, go to a boxing gym, get with a certified boxing trainer and have him work you into ring condition.

I have never seen a more grueling workout. I have been a bodybuilding and overall fitness fanatic since I was 14. I love the iron but I have to give credit where credit is due, BOXING TRAINERS ARE THE ABSOLUTE BEST! Not only do they spar with you (that's a small part of it) they get your body hard as stone and your cardiovascular system will be better than that of a runners. If you've ever fought before you know that lasting for more than 5 minutes of real fighting is hard. Imagine being ready for 36!

If you really want to get in shape find your nearest boxing gym and get in shape. You will also feel good knowing you can go a full 12 with any goldengloves contender by the summertime!

Yeah, I had one. She did get me back into shape, and after a while I went solo. It's a good way to start, especially if you're not really that motivated.

A couple years ago. Not even she could motivate me. You need to motivate yourself.

If you just need someone for guidance... it's worth it.

I have to agree with you. This past summer I wanted to try something new, so I joined a boxing gym and I showed up 3 times - oh my fucking god. veeeery intense. I didn't want to have to devote an hour n' a half each day and lose 15 lbs of muscle so I quit...

Everything that we did, was on a timer of 3 minute intervals (a round), and we got 1 minute rest.

Started out with about 5 rounds of jumping jacks for a warmup - jump roping for 15 fucking minutes is not an easy task. Your calves wanna DIE afterwards!

Then about 3 or 4 rounds of ab exercises, not easy.

Then the punching bag - it is MUCH more difficult than it looks... keeping your arms up, punching that fucker for a few rounds - at that point you want to die.

Then either glove work in a ring, or more exercising on stationary bikes and other machines...

You walk out drenched with sweat, intense stuff

Yes, I got a trainer a few months ago and it really helped me. I didn't have alot of weight to lose, but mainly wanted to tone up.

Like others have said, the appointment thing helps me. I know I am committed to meet him at a certain time and I know he will make do the entire work out. When I go on the days by myself and sometimes can talk myself out of going and then don't do the full work out. So, he definately keeps me on track and motiviated for sure

I do recommend it!!
