China's military on the upswing! yay!

In its annual report, the Pentagon says China has modernised and expanded its arsenal of nuclear missiles capable of reaching US territory, and deployed some 650-730 mobile, short-range ballistic missiles opposite Taiwan. China has also deployed its first two Russian-built guided missile destroyers, and is enlarging its submarine fleet, an event Pentagon analysts say would obstruct US ability to intervene in the case of a crisis over the island Beijing considers a renegade province.

"deployed some 650-730 mobile, short-range ballistic missiles opposite Taiwan"

Ok, but you don't do this unless you're ready to kick some ass. And now 2 russian made "missle destroyers"

this is gonna get ugly quick

China has been building up its navy for a while now. It has no choice. During the last confrontation with Taiwan the US sent 2 carrier fleets to make sure China didn't fuck around. Before China can take back Taiwan it needs to beef up its navy, which it has been doing. A map of Taiwan Strait will make things easier to understand:

If China can't control the Taiwan Strait then it can't control anything. It is only logical that they are going to do everything in their power to regain influence over their own back yard. And you can be sure that China will eventually act to take back Taiwan one way or another.

For example, recently declassified documents show that in 1969, while everybody was watching the war in Vietnam, the Chinese and Soviets were engaged in a full scale battle with 1 million Chinese troops fighting against around 750,000 Soviet troops. This battle started because the Soviets controlled territory that the Chinese believed belonged to them. The Chinese started the fighting by opening fire on and killing Russian troops patrolling the disputed territory. When all was said and done and the fighting was over China kept the territory they wanted.

Nice! We need world War 3. For the next Battlefield 3.

Battlefield 2 is lame because it's a "fake" future war.

Not just that, but consider the landing at Normandy in World War 2. A Chinese invasion of Taiwan could very easily be the exact same thing. But if you consider the advances made in weapons since then, it has one of two possabilities.

1 - Ten times the number dead (not just from the increased number of people there) and a much longer fight.
2 - Much quicker.

I personally think it would be a combination, it would last longer, but has the potential to be much more costly in terms fo a body count.

The need for a navy goes beyond just controling the Taiwan Straight as well. Think about, obviously Taiwan is an island so troops need to be gotten there some how. And how are they supposed to combat the US, if we do get involved and they do strike back at us, without a navy? I personally think it would be a bad idea for China to try to engage both the US and Taiwan (if it ever came to that) unless they had backing from a country that had a strong navy. Even if they have more people than the US, those people can't do a whole hell of a lot if they can't get to the US.

Yeah right, Canada will protect us!

But seriously, Canada sucks, and if North Korea, China, Japan, Russia & a few other countries invade us we're fucked.

Let's be realistic here.

If there's a nuclear war between two countries, it affects all countries because other nuclear countries will launch theirs just to be safe. It's a tiny planet. Everyone would be fucked. And if it happened, all those stupid sci-fi holocaust movies with sad endings would be a good example of the future. After a couple of hundred of years, if the human race still existed, balance would slowly return (whatever that new balance is).

If it's a conventional war, the world population will be put in turmoil, physically, emotionally, economically and then after a decade or two after it's over and borders / regimes have changed, balance will slowly return (whatever that new balance is).

You beat China by cutting off it's natural resources, not by invading it.. If we invade china or protect what china thinks they own then nuclear war will be started.. Afgan's Oil lines is part of the key...

We can't carpet bomb china (just flat impossible), we can't invade china, we can't protect Taiwan.. China wants control of materials that Taiwan has so it can bargain for resources it doesn't have.

World control starts with full control of all resources. Don?t think United States, think United Nations & NWO. Which China is not a part of.

The big problem for China is the US. I don't think troop transport is as difficult these days. If it has the naval power it can also launch an amphibious assault. It also has the ability to transport troops by air as well. I don't think Taiwan could hold out against China very long on its own.

China needs to do a couple things before it can think of taking back Taiwan, however. First, it needs to own the Taiwan Strait. I mean it needs to overwhelmingly own it, so that even the US wouldn't think of walking in there. Second, it needs to beef up not only its navy, but its space technology as well. In modern warfare, if you don't have a strong satellite presence you are blind. China needs to get more military satellites in orbit and it needs to be able to defend them. Right now China doesn't have the naval or space technology to take on the US, not even in the Taiwan Strait. China understands this and will continue to work to catch up in these areas. Until then, Taiwan has nothing to worry about.

A couple of Rockets into China's government infrastructure would paralyse them entirelly.

And lets be perfectly honest...

Many (Most) Chinese want to turn to capitalism and thus after a number of stretegic strikes and some money funding a new China government it's game over and next country for the USA.

If they launched a couple nukes from China, I honestly don't think they'd get very close to US soil before being taken out. Now if they sent a whole shitload of nukes, it's a completely different story.

Air invasion is an option, but it's a very risky one, especially since in the begining they wouldn't hold any land, so the transports would be getting shot at from all directions (which brings into it the importance of an air force). And assuming a massive air transport was successful and say 10k soldiers were on the ground...now what? 10k is a large number yes, but 10k soldiers in the middle of Taiwan with how much help? And limited resources? Air transport would be more beneficial if China had control of some parcel of land inside Taiwain.

Holding the Taiwan Strait would actually be quite difficult if the US was involved. When you consider how small it is, a combined US Naval attack from North and South at the same time would sandwich their Navy, and no matter how strong it is, that is a tough position to fight yourself out of. Obviously doable, but the sustained losses would be a major impact in the long-term of a war.

Obviously doable, but the sustained losses would be a major impact in the long-term of a war.
I would think they would try a combined air/amphibious landing. I would think that before they tried to land anybody they would have already pounded the island so that resistance is minimal. They have the ability to hit Taiwan from the mainland, which they demonstrated a few years ago when they launched a missile over the island. I imagine they would pound Taiwan from the mainland as well as the air and sea before attempting any landing of troops.

As for holding the Taiwan Strait I agree it would be difficult. China needs to do a lot of building before it gets there. With a big enough navy, however, I think it can accomplish this. It does have the advantage of mainland defenses assisting in the fighting. This is also where satellite technology comes in. US satellite technology would allow the US to efficiently target Chinese defenses. Without the same ability China would be at an extreme disadvantage. Although I imagine that Russia might share some of its space technology as well....

Just because the US and Russia are on speaking terms now doesn't mean they're allies. Far from it.

If you have to prepare for a war, it's best to assume you'll be alone in the fighting, because you never know how quickly you may be alone, even if others promise to help.

If china does decide to take over Taiwan the US won't do anything about it, I mean has the US even acknowledge Taiwan as an independent country?
The US would have to invade China to help Taiwan (since according to the US Taiwan is a part of China)

Didn't we just have this same discussion last week?

http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=492633

China cannot succesfully invade Taiwan right now...It's a long way off if ever.

Maybe after China gets to use some of that technology against us, Clinton will get his picture in their museum, ala John Kerry.

I can't find the article now, but last year China's own defense minister was talking about the firepower of the US Carrier fleet. In his comments he said that China could deal with one Carrier group, and possibly even two, but three or more would be over whelming air power.

These days more than ever the most important thing is air power. A fleet of 5 US air craft carriers would be able to decimate China from a millitary point of view. It's important to remember that being superior from a millitary stand point and taking over and occupying territory are two different things. The US would not need to and would not be able to occupy China, but they sure as shit could pound them with conventional weapons.

All of this is changing as China works hard to upgrade their technology and does not take in to consideration nuclear arms.
