You will get better value for money in Brisbane, the weather is great and some of the best beaches in the country are within a two hour drive.

In terms of livability, you can't beat Brisbane.

Australia has 2 big cities, and 3 medium cities

Big cities are Sydney and Melbourne

Medium cities are Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide

If you want to live near the beach, I would choose either Sydney, Brisbane, or Perth.

The Gold Coast is probably Australia's most famous area for beaches, it's kinda close to Brisbane (~1hr drive). The Gold Coast is full of hotels and people on holidays, it not really a city though.

Personally, I like Sydney. Living in the Manly Beach area might suit you. Expect to pay at least $500 AUD a week for a 1 bedroom furnished apartment rental.

You can only stay for 3 months on a tourist visa, but you can leave (ie: fly to New Zealand for the weekend, then come back in for another 3 months).

I think it's possible to extend a tourist visa to 6 months, but you probably have to fill out an application and wait forever for it to be approved. If you have the money, just spend some time in New Zealand, Fiji, or some other country close by.

Flying around Australia is fairly cheap.

Budget airlines are www.virginblue.com.au and www.jetstar.com

sydney is the best place to live.

i live 2min from manly beach and its great. 15min jetcat ride (ferry) to the city where all the main bars/clubs/resturants etc or $30 cab.

I am up in brisbane alot for work, worked in perth for a month and been to melbourne for holidays......you either want sydney or melbourne, i would suggest sydney just cuz its a better climate that melbourne.

I love New Zealand, but not for its cities, the country scenery is what I would go for. Amazingly beautiful.

Brisbane is good, but it comes down to what you like to do and what climate you like. June 06 will be winter here, so if you want to stay warm then move somewhere north, ie anywhere in Queensland (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Noosa) or northern New South Wales. Sydney for a mixture of good weather, clubs, nightlife, beaches. Melbourne for cooler weather and culture, clubs, cafes, nightclubs.

After travelling round the world the last 50 days, its really nice to come back to Brisbane and just relax and have some space. Its a relaxed city, with little traffic problems that other cities have.

Maybe check out a few places first before settling on one.

Cheers, Matt

you all keep saying the city you live in... so what's #2

I don't live in a city.. I would say Melbourne hands down. Somewhere near St Kilda if you want the beach. Brisbane is too hot.. Sydney has Manly and the northern beaches and is ok..
It depends on how much you want the beach and whether you're actually going to use it and swim etc or whether it's more the "vibe" and taking nice walks on it. If you're going to surf.. then maybe go further north for the warmer water. The gold coast is always an option although it's not a city like Sydney, Brisvegas, Melbourne etc in the strictest sense.

Yup I used to live in Melb but now down Torquay way. As everyone else already said. Melb for the Nightlife, Syd for the sluts, Brisvegas because it's always bloody sunny up there. Just skip Wa and NT unless you like boring ass desert and stuff.

I lived on Manly beach, N.S.W for 4yrs and loved it.
Food and entertainment there is great and everyone LOVES
to drink! LOL It's the Aussie way mate!
Queensland is nice but I've never lived there, either which way,
Australia as a whole is nice, moving in June will be a little chilly
though as it will be coming into winter. As far as visa goes, 3mths
max but just buy a ticket to Auckland, New Zealand for a week
and then fly back into Aussie.

yeah.. nimbin's even better for that with their annual hemp festival and being allowed to deal on the streets all year around. Byron does of course shit all over it in terms of doing stuff.. Nimbin is a one street town in the hills 40min from the beach as opposed to being on the beach and having all the amenities. Then again they're only 40-60 min from each other so it's no big deal.

Canberra and South Australia have pot growing laws allowing you to grow plants and only be hit with a fine. Though they may have changed slightly in the last few years cause drug syndicates enlisted 100 people to all grow 3 plants or whatever. Think you can't grow hydro anymore or something.
