Does the government have nothing better to do?
TAMPA - A local woman?s desire to broadcast Creole music has landed her in jail, accused of operating a pirate radio station.
Deputies arrested Marjorie Voltaire, 20, of 13140 La Place Circle, late last night at the request of the Federal Communications Commission, which oversees radio broadcasts. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff?s Office, Voltaire is charged with unauthorized transmission of a radio broadcast. She was said to be illegally broadcasting on 89.3 FM from an apartment west of the University of South Florida campus. Sheriff?s Spokesman J.D. Callaway described the operation as ?amateur,? but said the station was clearly violating state law. Audio from a couple of CD players and mixing boards, Callaway said, was pumped through a homemade transmitter and fed to a makeshift antenna attached to a 20 ft. tall pole. ?Radio transmissions were being broadcast at the time detectives entered the apartment,? Callaway said in a statement. It is unclear whether the alleged broadcasts were interfering with a licensed radio station. A call to the FCC was not immediately returned. The 89.3 frequency is near to WUSF-FM, which is licensed for 89.7. Its transmitter is located near Riverview. An arrest report indicates the unauthorized radio transmission charge is a third degree felony. Callaway said the maximum punishment carries at least a one year prison sentence. Voltaire is still in the Hillsborough County jail. Her bail is set at $2,000. Callaway hinted that others may face similar charges. ?the investigation is continuing,? he said. ?We expect additional arrests.? http://www.tboblogs.com/index.php/ne..._radio_arrest/ |
