I just installed Windows Vista on my laptop.....it r0cks

Installed without any problems on an IBM Thinkpad X series laptop. No
driver problems, no errors, runs smooth and it has some kickass features.
Even though I'm not a big windows fan I must admit that so far I'm quite
impressed.

I have a copy of RC2 Vista on my comp. I haven't installed it yet. What is the consensus on it as of yet. I don't want any problems, LOL, the usual MS stuff.

You can laugh all you want. 95% of the windows problems most people have is
not because of windows but because of the people who use it. I need windows
coz I have too many clients that send me stuff that I can't watch/use on
unix. Yeah I know of vmware and shit....anyway so far I'm very happy with it.
I don't install tons of software so for as long as I have ran any windows version
I never had many problems with it. All my old software works fine without a
single issue, all the stuff in laptop works fine aswell.

I've got to see if it remains stable as I just installed it today but so far it looks
ok and i see what I like so I guess time will tell, I'll keep you guys posted if it
fucks up....coz I'd be the first to admit that it sucks if it does

Boldy voor 2007 heb jij het ook geinstalleerd hahaha

must have done on purpose. I'll find a workaround for that or just use MSIE
I don't bother that much to be honest.

You can't really compare....it's quite different than XP. You can compare it
with the step they made from 3.1 to 95. The user interface is different a lot
of the stuff inside is different. It has a lot of new nifty features which simplify
a lot of stuff, it's much more organised and files/software locations, registry
has improved a LOT. It has cool usefull gadgets and it has a lot more networking
stuff, like vpn, file sharing, connection stuff, encryption stuff for personal files
and such.....it's quite different than XP.

Till now I ran XP which worked fine....I just got a new laptop and decided to
try and so far I'm not thinking of moving back to XP. I think they made a good
improvement, it's too early to judge about performance and speed but it's not
slower and I haven't run into any kind of problem or stupid stuff that limits what
I want to do with it.

I guess you just have to try to find out if you really like it or not. From what
I can tell I like it and I haven't seen any issues why I would advise not to at
least give it a try. No hardware problems, no driver issues, everything worked
without touching any of the settings myself.

Not sure if it would work that way on EVERY machine but I've got an IBM
so all the shit inside is supported without any exceptions.

MS was giving away free beta copies before, they had a download link to the dvd iso file, thought maybe that was the one.

I found it on torrentspy, might give it a shot.

I'm probably one of the biggest Microsoft fanbois you'll find, but really, there is no reason to upgrade to Vista from XP unless the extra eye candy is a huge factor for you. Many of the showstopper featuers in Vista have been delayed or canceled, it's probably best to wait until SP1 or so until upgrading for "normal" users.

Not everybody is a broke ass wannabe webmaster that gets his shit from
w4r3z sites and hangs out on message boards pretending to be a big player

But to answer the question.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...y/default.mspx

you can download it for free and you can upgrade when the official version
is released. If I still like it by then I'll buy a license as I use software
professionaly and make money with it....so I don't mind spending a few bucks.
It's called investment, it's tax deductable.....ask your mummy to look up that
word for you and explain what it means.

1st, Linux vs Windows... Linux is like driving a stick. Sure I enjoy 0 to 60 is 5.8 seconds here and there but when I am looking to chill or drive my parents to the airport, automatic is just fine.

2nd, I did the whole move into XP thing back in the day about a year and a half before it was released... It was OK but I kept hitting into errors. Vista is not as buggy from what I have heard but, like someone said, it doesn't have any of the useful features in it and so it is all just looks... Not sure I'd want to spend time fucking with something based on looks...

It might be trimmed down from what they initially promised....but still it has
quite a few new features. Apart from the features what I like most so far is
that everything is much better organised. I hardly use software. Email, Browser,
ssh client, ultraedit, zend encoder, office and that's about it. Then I get tons
of documents from clients which is the main reason why I use windows on my
normal workstation. so I don't have to convert all that shit to be able to
open it on a unix box.

Anyway if you say it hardly isn't different than XP than I say you're wrong.
the explorer for browsing your hdd's is a LOT better than on XP to name just
1. There's additional network stuff that is defenitely not in XP

apart from the eyecandy which indeed looks slick it also has a function.
transparant windows are usefull you can overlay windows and still be able
to see which is what instead of clicking them all to see which one you were
looking for, yeah, yeah alt + tab works aswell.....anyway obviously what you
like is personal so I'm not trying to convince people to install it.

I probably wouldn't if I hadn't a new laptop without an OS so I that was an
easy opportunity to just give it a try. All I'm saying is I like what I see and
so far it seems to work pretty well.

So for now I won't bother installing XP over it unless I run into serious issues
which for me means that it's more usefull than XP else I would have
reinstalled back to XP without a shadow of a doubt

I just shared my experience and say if you think about it giving it a go
then I would say go for it as it's pretty decent and works just fine.
I didn't have any compatibility issues with software either. Everything I use
installed and runs without any problem

If you don't feel like trying then don't I'm not trying to convert anyone.

As I have mentioned a few times before in this thread I installed it on an
IBM thinkpad X series. So I don't know what hardware is supported and what
not. But I do know that for HP, (recent) Dells, IBM there are no driver issues.
I didn't have to install a single driver manually, all was 100% working when
installed.

I can imagine that certain no brand OEM stuff isn't supported yet. I haven't
tested what works and what doesn't

trust me it's not just eyecandy. you think they'd really release something that
has different icons and themes, they have tried that before and they have
learned from that mistake. It wasn't delayed for no reason. Yes if you compare
the features with the initial promise list than yes it's somewhat trimmed down.
But it certainly has quite a bit new stuff and existing features have significally
been improved.

If you got a machine you could try it on and you have 2 hours to spare it's
at least worth to check out.....then you can decide wether you like it or not.

as always everybody has an opinion or repeat what other say about it but you
don't really know till you try. All it takes to find out is 1 dvd and approx 2 hours

No issues so far, I'll make some screenshots tomorrow.

software that I have installed:

SecureCRT
UltraEdit
Thunderbird
FireFox (Runs ok but seems slow, I'm quite sure MS did that on purpose)
Dell KVM over ip Manager
Zend Encoder
Filezilla
Miranda-im
Putty
vlc player
divx player
winrar
google talk
skype

That's all I don't need more stuff on my laptop and I won't try other stuff
aswell, I like my box to be clean and organised.

All the addons for firefox work aswell, tabmix plus, x-ray, adblock plus
same for miranda.

I can't judge performance compared to XP as it's a new laptop so I haven't
installed XP on it. It seems pretty quick but with the specs of the laptop
I wouldn't expect anything else.

I've connected it to XP workstations over lan, mapped network drives, all
without issues, nothing has crashed yet or produced errors of any kind.

Application data is stored in a different path than on XP but I had no problem
copying stuff over and importing email and other stuff in any of the applications.

Windows says minimum required ram 512Mb but I wouldn't use it with less than 1Gb it.....it probably will work but it will be quite slow as it uses quite
a bit of ram when you use it intensive.
