Most laptops have slower hard drives and if you do any video production work or play any games their built in vid cards suck.

I went from a desktop, to using a laptop exclusively, back to using a desktop. I found the laptops that had the power I needed ran very hot and just didn't seem to have enough cooling hence they seemed to burn out quickly. In the year I was "all laptop" I went through two Toshiba's.....always seemed one was in the shop and it just wasn't worth the hassle.

I still use a laptop when travelling though

Desktops are needed for all photo and video related stuff, plus games. Ever tried to handle really huge files in photoshop on an average laptop, or video editing ?

I have a laptop and a desktop machine and I'd never want to miss one of them.

Desktop on my main desk - dual wide screens, 2x 10krpm RAID0, 4gb ram
excellent performance for multi tasking

Laptop on travel, 2nd desk.

I used to work on laptop for 2 years and sometimes it hurt my neck.

I can think of lots of reasons:

More Memory
Faster processors
Faster/Bigger Hard Drives
More storage bays
More Ports
Screen Size
Better ventilation
Less likely to be stolen
Far superior graphics

I have desktops but I don't touch them. I like having all of my needs on one machine in a portable package since I travel a lot.

I have dual monitors... my laptop's 15" and a 22" on the desk.

I have hard drives galore, a 200gb installed and an external 250, 500 & 750.

My cpu is a dual core 2 duo running at 2 ghz.

2 gigs of ram expandable to 4 if I need.

Webcam on the monitor.

If I want to use an external keyboard I can.

All in a package I can pick up and take with me anywhere at a moments notice.

I don't think there's any logical reason to want to use a desktop.

I have both, and hardly use my desktop anymore. All my submitting tools and galleries are on my laptop so when I travel I don't have to change anything around. My desktop pretty much sits there and plays music while I work.

I use a desktop replacement laptop, 17", 160GB, 1GB RAM expandable to 4, keyboard identical with a desktop one. Kinda having both in one.

But the price is definitely the main reason for using a desktop IMO.

That is what I have. From the Sager brand. Three years old and I haven't had to upgrade anything. 17" screen, DVD, gig of ram (can upgrade), 3 ghz p4, video card that can actually be upgraded with a certain ati one. I plan on getting another one when I can't run anything on this. Maybe another year or so!

I've got a tiny 12'' powerbook. But when it's at my desk it's hooked up to a big ol flat screen, wireless keyboard mouse combo, and 1TB worth of external HDs. It's fast as hell, has plenty of mem/cpu (which can be upgraded at any time), 5 button mouse and wicked keyboard. And, with this job I travel alot. When I do, takes me all of two seconds to pack up and get moving.

I do have a desktop as well. Hooked up to the same big ol flatscreen and wireless keybord/mouse. Everything is ran through a KVM switch so I can bounce between desktop and laptop with the flick of a switch. However, my desktop is a gaming rig. I don't do any work on it, just switch to it to kill nazi's and what not.

I use multiple desktops for video editing & encoding and photo & graphics work, and a laptop for email and forums and miscellaneous stuff. It's not an either or option for me, they are both useful.

And if you shop like me for Win XP Core 2 Duo desktops on ebay or at the Dell Outlet for refurbished desktops online, you will get super-fast systems useful for all kinds of heavy duty applications for a fraction of the cost of a laptop.

I navigate way faster on a desktop and the system is also faster.

Bought a new Vaio last year but it was slow as fuck, didn't beat my 8 year old desktop.

More expensive for what you get compared to desk top. Can't upgrade graphics card for future expansion. Laptop HDD run at 5400 RPM desktops 7200. Best laptops have FSB of 667 Mhtz desktops 1066 Mhtz. A $750 desktop can outperform a $1500 laptop any day of the week.

this was a solution I was thinking about.
standard laptop while traveling and when I reach home I just plug in all external gear as:
wide screen, ergo keyboard + mouse = ergonomics
external 1/2 TB disk = storage

I think that way I can enjoy both worlds.

Unless you are editing video on it there's not a lot of performance difference that's going to matter now a days. It's not like it's still 2002 and the best you are going to do is a P4. Core 2 Duo at 667 with a nice video card and a couple of gigs of ram or better is all anyone needs.

Price is no object, especially in this biz. 50 or 60 signups gets you the top of the line anything so that's not an issue. Upgrade? Expansion? Ha, just buy a new one.

I think it all depends on what you do.For video editing a pro laptop for that would run about 10 grand, there are custom companies that make them. Its really not worth it.

Desktop for me. Design work is impossible to do on a laptop. The color changes and grooved screen sucks ass. The keyboards suck too. :P
