Do you pay in advance to save money?

Right now I am going through some of my bills and prepaying for 2008. It often times will save you money (discounts from the vendor, etc.), gives you another write off for 2007, plus I figure it will also free up some monthly expenses next year which will allow me to spend that money elsewhere.

A few examples:
Domains
Hosting
Stats Remote
Online services (Rhapsody, Netflix, ISP, etc)

Oh, and it also prevents me from spending too much money on myself for Christmas. :-)

Depends but I have a lot of bills on autopay these days.

I will knock out about 1000 domains before the end of this year for the reason you stated above.

well its just good to do that just in case the money you were expecting for the start of the new year doesn't come in as well as you planned.

Not necessarily a good idea. The expenses you claim for 2007 won't be there in 2008. Where you should place them depends on projected price increases, inflation, interest and mainly the return you expect to receive on your capital.

very true
Unless you gain something from prepaying, it's kinda stupid to prepay just for the sake of convenience ...

My thinking is as follows: if the "lump sum" discount is greater than the interest rate I can get from the bank, I pay the lump sum. Yes, hypothetically I could make take the installment deal and make a greater effective interest in good investments, but I am just playing it safe.

My cable company makes me pay a month in advance... to date I have yet to see a discount as a result.

In 2008 there will be new expenses to cover...

Unless the savings beats the interest you could make on the money then NO it wouldnt be a prudent thing to do.

I've made that mistake Sly, with hosting. The hosting company turned out to be a bunch of shit after a few months and refused to reimburse me.

If you trust who you are paying and it's beneficial for tax reasons, go ahead.
