LCD or PLASMA flat screen?
What is better in your opinion and why? Would you buy a LCD or PLASMA flat screen monitor for watching TV?
And HD ready or full HD, why? |

I have a 42' LCD ( Sharp aquos ) and i Love it. ( picked LCD cause lots of people were telling me that plasma pixels will burn often and i paid $600 less cause it was a display model )
Check out that great article that s comparing both products: http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/p...ma-vs-lcd.html |

Plasma is often a bit more bright.
However, if you have a DVD player, or a DVR, and like to pause shit, Plasma is worse than CRT. Even with pixel shifting, white screen, and scrolling, I have a million 'TV bugs' burned into my screen from watching the same channel for over 3 minutes at a time. Fuck Plasma. ![]()

I've been doing LCD for a while now.
This is what I'm getting ready to replace my old living room tv with http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/detail.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subty pe=lcdtv&model_cd=LN52A750R1FXZA Only thing that worries me is right now no one really watches tv in that room much because the tv is older although it's the biggest one in the house. When/if I replace it that will be the one they all want to watch the DVDs and PPVs on. I'd be fine without a tv in that room at all (there are 5 in the house total) PK

As the above advantages show, plasma technology has the better picture quality in normal to low room lighting conditions and are better in 4 out of 5 picture quality categories. Plasma technology will almost without exception triumph during night time viewing. LCD televisions are great for sunroom/breakfast room type environments. |

I have a 42" plasma that isn't HD capable, and I have a 62" DLP LCD screen that is HD capable....and the picture on the plasma is far superior to the DLP.
I think someone nailed it earlier with the "plasma is often brighter" comment. The Plasma is brighter and more vivid than the DLP. Adjusting the color and light settings on the DLP don't help either, it just washes out the picture. If I had it to do over again I would have gotten plasma across the board. That's my ![]()

I have always felt plasmas look better. But it's a personal choice.
You know how at the store they line up all the TVs and they all look a bit different. You'll see one picture and think it sucks but someone else will come in and pick that same TV as the best picture.

Plasma has better contrast, is brighter and has a better fresh rate.
Plasma has a sheet of glass over it which can cause serious glare depending on lighting situation. LCD will last longer, but you'll likely replace either long before they die. I have a Plasma.

Definitely plasma!
Plasma's every pixel is a source of light, and lcd has a layer of lcd, and light from behind that layer, that's why lcd's look so washed off. Even more so on an analogue signal. |

I have a few of both types, and the Plasmas have an overall better picture. Sharper, brighter/crisper picture in my opinion.

Plasma
I chose plasma about 3 months ago and I love it! The Samsungs are the best Plasmas out there on the market so you won't be upset about the choice.
The biggest difference that I've read about between LCD and plasma is that LCD still suffers from pixellation issues during fast moving action scenes. You can see this to a greater degree when watching motion on standard monitors. Plasma handles that issue like a champ vs LCD. The only thing that you have to worry about with Plasma is burn in. During the first 100 hours of use you should set all the contrast and brightness settings to about 25% since this is when the phosphores burn their brightest (i.e. when it's brand new). After the 100 hours you can beat the heck out of the thing. Also don't leave static images on the screen for extended periods of time (like a paused video game or a TV show with a logo fixed in a corner). When I say extended I mean hours so this shouldn't affect your normal viewing habits. If you need to pause a game or something just switch out of game mode and back to cable or just turn it off. The bottom line is although it takes a bit more babying in the beginning I think you'll be happier in the long run. The best thing to do is to go to Best Buy and just compare the set you are planning on buying to all of the other Plasmas and LCDs on the wall. Once you get it I'm sure you'll love it. ![]() |

Personally I would say LCD is better. I've had both, and LCD does better in all kinds of different lighting environments, and the screen also lasts longer. Plasma will wear out in about 3 to 4 years (my own experience)

I just bought a 50 inch plasma last week at Costco for $1049, saw the same exact TV at Best Buy for $1800. So far so good, the picture is amazing when watching hdtv and dvd's. Some of the normal channels that aren't hd look a little strange like the aspect ratio is out of whack or something. Other than that its great. Costco gave me a 2 year warranty plus the manufacture warranty for no extra charge so if I have a problem they fix or replace it for free.
My only other gripe besides the non hd channels is transporting it. I was told they are extremely fragile and never to lay it face down while moving or the bulbs will break. This poses a problem for me because I bought a condo in Miami and will be moving in a few weeks from San Francisco, the moving company wants $600 to crate it. When I bought the TV I thought I was getting a good deal and didn't think twice, now I'm kicking myself for not waiting. |

what type of moving company, and how far? I've moved 3 plasmas, 3 times and never had to crate them before.
Just wrap it in the blankets and stand it up right in the truck -- no biggie.

I went with Ori. I checked with a few others and they all told me the same thing. It's 3000 miles from San Francisco to Brickell, Miami. This company will pick my stuff up in a smaller truck then weigh the load and then load it into a bigger truck with other peoples furniture and ship it. I'm driving my truck out there and was thinking about putting it in the back but I have an open bed and am a little nervous about damaging it. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, I still have until the 18th to decide. |

Very informative thread!
I was sold on plasma until I clicked on this thread. I never knew that plasmas had a layer of glass, which can mean glare, which I do not want at all from any angle. I just bookmarked this thread and will be watching it as I am in the market for an HDTV. What do you guys think about widescreen HDTVs? I'm definitely leaning towards a 1080 as opposed to a 720. ![]()

I have a 42" plasma and a 52" lcd. The plasma is 1080i/720p (bought it over 2 years ago) while the lcd is 1080p (6 months old). In all honestly, id much rather prefer a 1080p plasma but I dont feel like dropping $8k on a set.
both TVs that I bought i researched the crap out of. The LCD is by samsung and has some 120hz refresh dealio which is supposed to make the picture better and does slightly. if you are only going to watch movies through your cable company and dont have a bluray or hddvd player, then get a really nice 1080i/720p plasma for about $2k. if you plan on watching a lot of bluray/hd movies then get a 1080p set. I know a lot of people who dont even have HD cable and have a 1080p tv they over paid for. in all honestly, it comes down to what you want. go into a LOCAL (not best buy) TV place. most of those people know what they are talking about and will show you the difference. then go online and find the best price ![]()
