So I'm taking this VB.NET class...

Have any of you programmers taken this class? It's my first programming class. Is is useful or what? It's part of Visual Studio 2008 which I get free part of the Microsoft Academic Alliance program. I does include other programming languages which are probably more advanced.

I learned BASIC when I was 11 or 12 years old, literally

It's a great way to learn programming, I worked a bit with earlier versions of VB but it got boring fast, when I learned just normal BASIC not visual it was because all I had was a commodore 64 and I had no choice but to learn to program on it.

Ya it's been easy so far

This is an intro class bit the whole Visual Studio 2008 package seems like it has a lot to it though.

Really? A huge hospital near me is looking for a vb.net programmer. Pay range - $90,000 to $150,000. That would be worth it to most people...

It's a good language to learn... It gets fun when you combine it with Microsoft SQL - running programs off of a database. Even more fun when you use it towards ASP.net and develop web/database applications.

Not the best language but as good of a place to start as any. Best of luck to you.

I'd say 'At least it's .NET', since I know someone supporting a VB5 app still, in 2008, but.. it's VB.NET.

VB.NET is a great language to start learning programming. It doesn't share many syntax characteristics with most languages that people use for web apps but it does teach you about how Object Oriented Development works and it's simplicity really help as far as that learning curve goes... Once you get into C# you will start learning more of the C syntax which most other languages are based on like perl, php, java, C++, C etc.

I didn't like QuickBASIC so I wrote my own compiler.
