Australia now pushing for a MANDATORY filter to block 'hardcore' porn, gambling, etc?

I am not one to put on a tinfoil hat, but the Australian Government (when compared to other liberal democracies) has always been pretty draconian - it is just that most of us don't feel or realize it. Media freedom in this country (according to independent reports) is worse than many dictatorships, our "anti-terror" agencies pretty much do what they like and we have very draconian laws in regards to free speech.

When this was an opt-in single-tier filter only I didn't worry, when it became an opt-out single-tier filter I knew a lot of business would be lost but Australia was a small market (of course I had civil rights concerns beyond that), when it became a two-tier (one with mandatory bans and filters on content that is "illegal") and the other with optional filters for kids I started to really worry. When I realized they are already pushing to ban all sorts of content that crosses into the potentially illegal field in the first mandatory tier I got pissed.

Apart from the hardcore pornography ban which I am certain will occur down the line - if not now(remember it is already illegal to host such content on Australian servers) I think this is where a lot of us will start to realise how "regulated" Australia is when it comes to speech. On top of porn, gambling, etc, expect to see an Australian Government warning quite often when following controversial political links, religious links, etc if this shit goes through. Want to learn about Islam? You better make sure you are reading a Government sanctioned version that doesn't break our "hate" laws. Want to read about shady activities the AFP are getting up to that are illegal for the mainstream media to report? Well too fucking bad.

What pisses me off is how weak the "Christian right" is but yet it is constantly in the news, constantly been given the right to more power than it deserve - kind of like the radical left with the Greens party. It's been going on longer than you may think. I still remember the Howard government sucking Harradine's dick (by advocating net censorship) so he would agree to let them sell off Telstra.

I'm fairly confident that I can come up with a technical solution that will completely bypass this filter, but that does no good for the Average Joe, and still has long term ramifications for all Aussies... and other countries looking to follow suit.

This may be of interest, it's regarding a Finnish site that contained info on the country's CP filters. (No CP, just information about the censorship regime). Ultimately, the site itself ended up in the blacklist. (!!!)

I think someone said if it goes ahead you can ring your ISP and opt out of the blocking as long as you pay a monthly rate or some crap. But you had to show your over 18 and sign a contract. It's total BS the way this is going.

There will be 2 levels of blocking. A ban all adult and naughty sites one which you call your isp you can opt-out off.

A 2nd one which you can't opt-out off. Which will include anything the gov or the Christian right believe are bad for you to judge as an adult. Such sites as pro-anorexia, pro-suicide, right to die sites, and so on.

Isp's have already came out and said they will pass on any costs to their customers involved with the maintenance of this server side blocking bollocks, so it's a load of wank imo.

Maybe if kids actually went and played outside the world wouldn't be such a horrible, horrible place. Krudd is doing us a favour by helping parents who are too inept or lazy to supervise their children while they're on the net. He's also giving us adults a bit of a backhand as well as a not-so-gentle reminder that we must fall into line and only view what the govt deems appropriate.

Speaking of kids going out... have you seen the latest Foxtel ads suggesting that the family can save a lot of money by sitting on the couch and watching TV, rather than going out? Un-freakin-believable!
