Led Zeppelin to tour! But...

Is it Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant?

"Led Zeppelin to tour, record without singer Plant
11 hours ago

LONDON (AFP) — Legendary rock band Led Zeppelin are planning to return to recording and touring -- without singer and frontman Robert Plant, bassist John Paul Jones told BBC radio.

Jones said the hard-rocking group were trying out different singers to replace Plant, who has repeatedly voiced his reluctance to join in a full reunion after a mammoth one-off gig at the O2 Arena in London last December."

I think it's an all or nothing proposition.

There is no replacing Plant.

Raises a good question though. You're a big star, a rock music legend and icon of megastical proportions. --- Do you owe the world another tour since millions upon millions of fans (who bought your fucking 8-tracks, tapes, records, CD's and put millions in your pocket) want to see the band one more time?

At least a part of me is inclined to think Robert should suck it up, get with the program, and take one for the team. (and still give it 100% effort)

Lead singer from WHite Snake will fill in for Plant I would bet money on that.

THe delema is simple. Plant is not young any more, and he is the singer. I can not blame him for not wanting to do it, he would never sound like he used to. While the Musicians are old they do not relie on thier voices but the instruments.

Guitarists live forever, singers themselves go way side 90% of the time long before a guitarist or bassist would or even drummers.

and if he does you'll say the same thing in 10 years when the rest of the band is broke again and need him for "one last tour".

Hmm, well no, I don't think I would.

But what makes you think JPJ, Jimmy Page and Jason Bonham are broke dude? I bet each of them could buy and sell you 1000 times over.

Dylan cant sing - yet he still does try.

Garcia before he killed himself wasnt very pleasing to the ears- yet he was loved and worshiped by many

I agree its not Led Zep without Plant.

Interesting...especially Page toured with Coverdale in the Seventies... He has same type of voice(in fact, had a career of copying Plant) and kind of have the same haircut and look... But he's no Robert Plant.

Just imagine they would release the record as Page & Jones, toured as Page & Jones etc.

All the Zeppelin fans would buy it and come to see them, noone would be bitching.

So it's mainly a matter of the Zeppelin brand to me.

Robert sure has his reasons why not to join, but at least one farewell tour with 3/4 of the original line up would be great.

if they werent broke they wouldnt proceed with a tour without their front man. they broke up 30 years ago, played one fucking gig and now the world must see zeppelin tour again? without Plant? yeah, they're doing it for the fans

ps, broke is a subjective term. broke may mean homeless to you but to many of these rich fucks broke is someone telling them they cant afford something.

pss, this is setting up a scary precedent. sooner or later retired rockers in wheelchairs drooling on themselves will be wheeled on stage with a "filler" band who play their songs and tour with their name because someone who once played in that band is still on stage. what a joke.

True in many cases. However, I know several people who were at the show in London last year, all say Plant sounded very good still. Also, if you read the article, it says:
Quote:
Plant has been busy touring with US country violinist Alison Krauss following a well-received hit album together.
which would indicate that Plant isn't exactly resting his voice much less losing it.

Actually many veteran musicians would. In lots of cases it's obviously so not about the money. After 300 million album sales do you really think any of these guys are even in the same universe as "broke"?

Please.

Funny you post this, my best friend Rick Hughes as been asked to send some tapes to audition for lead singer.

He's got the voice and his a die hard fan and his what Rock N Roll is all about.

Thing he told me, the only reason they are asking singers to audition is to put pressure on Plant.

But who knows right, would be pretty cool to brag about my friend being lead singer of Zeppelin ;-)

Slight correction - Coverdale toured with Plant 93 / 94 if I remember well.

I'm a huge fan of Coverdale, no matter how he was sliding the 80's hair metal wave with his narcistic video creations and no matter how many moronic things he did (like laying off the complete best 80's Whitesnake lineup), he still has a great voice colour / impressive range and bluesy feeling too if needed.

paul rogers should be in a michael mcdonald tribute band, not fronting for queen. thanks for proving my point. unfortunately i wont change my ways since i usually fall in love with the song, not the people in the room making it. when you start changing things, such as vocals, it becomes a different song even if the people behind you were in the original band. if snoop dogg filled in for Plant would it still be led zeppelin? but he's singing the right words so it must be so! sorry, close isnt good enough.

I'm bummed as hell. I was really looking forward to a Led Zeppelin tour. I would still go see them with Chris Robinson but no way would I see them with David Coverdale. Hopefully Plant comes to his senses.

John Paul Who? j/k

Really I don't care who they tour with as long as I can get a decent fix of the music itself regardless of who is singing. Of course Zep w/o Plant is fucked up. Seen both of them (Page and Plant) separately and both shows were great.

Far-L and I were talking earlier today that we would rather see Dark Star Orchestra on a good night rather than the real Grateful Dead on a shitty Jerry night. If the musicians are on and the material is right, the magic can happen. Bottom line is: It's really all about the music.

Furthering his point Far-L used the analogy of going to see Ludwig Van's 9th symphony each year and it's always been stellar performances even though Ludvig is not conducting the music.

Regardless of who's singing, having them out touring allows a whole new generation of people to witness one of the greatest living guitar players work his craft. All I can say seeing after seeing Jimmy Page live, is "HOLY FUCKING SHIT!"

My , Go see them before they all disappear and we loose the opportunity.

No doubt it would be worthy.

Let's not forget Jimmy is one of the most original and fun to listen to guitarists of all time and John Paul, even he was always trying to keep things quiet with a strong embargo on his private life, is responsible for many memorable arrangements, extremely essential part of the original band and a very impressive yet underestimated musician and composer.

You're right! I went back and read what I had written and God knows why i wrote Seventies(which makes no sense since Zeppelin was still active...) but meant nineties like you said!

at least, you did pay attention so I give you credits for that too!

also wanted to add that Whitesnake left an image of an average singer but went back and listenned to older stuff and he did have a good voice... the best thing about Whitesnake is Tawnee Kitten ( his wife back then) splitting on cars in pretty much all their videos! Yummy!

But who knows right, would be pretty cool to brag about my friend being lead singer of Zeppelin ;-)
I saw Rick Hugues in a small venue on the South Shore a couple of years back and he made a strong impression on us. I was a fan of Sword but hadn't made the connection until he went on stage. His gig was awesome and he would totally fit on there, Although anyone who will get the job will have to suffer the impossible to win comparision.

There is no led zeppelin without John Bonham or Robert Plant
Zeppelin has been dead for years

Can't see this happening without Plant. I'd love to see them though so I hope he changes his mind.

Totally agree. Been a running joke for years with my music fanatic buddies..."John Paul Who???" It's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Genius.

He has an amazing collection of Alembic basses that I am very envious about.

John Paul was probably the strongest all around musician in led zep.

I was at the London concert. I figured it would be once in a lifetime.

Breaks my heart to not have Plant in on a tour, but since I know pretty much know each note of every song, I appreciate Page and JPJ on what they have brought to the stage. I would go to the concert...even with no singer, I would end up singing every song myself

Again you're sadly off the mark with your opinion. Early reports and reviews of the new Queen tour mostly indicate success and a show worth seeing.

Pay special attention to the comments below the review.

Rogers may not have been my choice as well, but he is if anything a veteran frontman who puts 100% into his craft. I have no doubt that is what led the band to go with him. To say otherwise is to say Brian May & co. are "stupid". :D
