I am gonna go with Joe Satriani.

I took satriani's video lessons online, the guy knows literally fucking every mode in every key and can play them all while changing the key, the way he thinks of the guitar is almost infinate.

I learned his sweeping style's and most the modes in the key E A and still learning from these videos by heart. I play mostly in E, C and A with F alot of the time in my stuff to make darker sounds in my metal making endeavors. Merging things together is the brilliance of Joe Satriani's ability.

For raw thrash that I really like and do my best to imitate alot of the time I am going to go with Dimebag Darrel believe it or not. I ordered a Dean Razorback with 81 and 85 EMG's with my winnings from the casino. I got the Dimne Slime if any of ya ever heard of it.

Guitar is my 2nd life and I spend about 4 - 6 hours a day playing. But those two guys are THE MOST Inspirational to me I seen them both Live, and Darrel's last performances with Damage Plan were his most remarkable of years and times. It's a dame shame some fucker killed him on stage.

You seem to know a lot about music AlienQ.

I play when I get a chance. I set that site up for my brother, he's a rock guitarist along the lines of Satch, but has no clue about setting up interweb sites.

technique and mathematical knowledge in and out are big criteria, but I think innovation and taking the guitar as a sound making device beyond is another criteria

The list should have Tom Morello on it

did things with a guitar that were fresh and so damn listenable at the same time

Its a really clever site honestly, I been looking for a site kinda like this where ya can see some of these guitarists doing solo's and such. Youtube has many clips especially of Dimebag and Satriani. I have watched them countless times trying to figure out some of the tricks these guys pull off.
Dimebag was not an musically educated guitarist, infact he never took lessons as far as I know, he just started thrashing as a kid and developed an incredible off the hook style.

Here take a look at this.

Move the clip to 1 minute in and enjoy. His use of the wawah in subtle matter is fucking incredible, his stage presence is unparalled If ya ask me stage presence is 30% of a guitarist's appeal

Notice my 2 favorite guitarists are 2 contrasting opposites. I have no fucking idea what that means Also notice he is playing the the Dean Dime Slime Razorback guitar, thats the one I ordered. Darrel started a whole series of custom guitars with Dean Guitars.

He also uses a Dean Rebel. Which is of course of his design as well.

Ah shit man I was doing so good not spending hours on time waster sites.

Voting for a "best" guitarist is like voting for "best food of all time".

Personally I like Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Reb Beach, Dimebag, Yngwie, for lead/solos but also Hetfield, Mustaine, and a bunch of other masters for their rhythm/harmony styles.

Hey and by the way Cunning Stunt, kudos to you for this idea. I really like how you utilized WP, YT videos, and ad scripts. It's nice, clean, and functional. And really, really entertaining for us guitar heads.
Thank you Sir!

Ten Reasons Jerry Garcia Belongs On This List

10. Innovated a guitar style that influenced the entire genre of Rock Guitar - "acid rock"

9. Unique tone is considered one of the most expressive of all time

8. Could play as fast as any other cat in the list

7. Often copied never duplicated - unlike some of the other greats listed there like Stevie Ray is to Hendrix for example

6. Range of composition expands and expounds across the broadest range of influences, jazz, rock, classical, bluegrass, etc.

5. Played more gigs with his own bands as well as collaborated with other musical genius's more than any other listed

4. Extremely adept at improvisation

3. Pushed the sound of his instrument sponsoring innovations in technologies

2. Pure love of playing live

1. Helped deliver rock from being simple 4/4 time and opened the jam potential for every great prog rocking guitarist thereafter

well, I'd say TO THE VERY LEAST Django Reinhardt and Paco de Lucia. Now, if you mean only rock and only electrical guitar, it depends on many factors. For good taste, I'd include "Mr. Good Taste", David Gilmour. For innovation, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore and Glenn Branca. For sheer feeling, George Harrison. For taking guitar to another level, Kevin Shields. For taking guitar to (another) another level, Blixa Bargeld. For technical abilities (and extreme boredom) Al Di Meola and Pat Metheny. Hell, add any jazz player. For talent and innovation, Robert Fripp and Andy Summers

Anyway, on technical abilities, taste and extreme innovation on guitar limits, none in your list gets to the first 2 I mentioned, it's like Django, Paco De Lucia, then a crew of Tomatito and other spanish and classical guitar players, a big empty gap and then the ones in your list, although I like to listen Gilmour, Ranaldo and Harrison rather than Reinhardt and De Lucia, but man, objectively they're a whole different league, any crafty guitarist would tell you that.

So, with all these considerations, my "guitarist who I like despite other people's subjectiveness" list (in no special order):

Neil Young (until some other guitar player makes an amazing solo with just 1 note), Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, Gilmour, Van Halen, Hendrix, Dave Navarro, Frank Black/Joey Santiago, Geoge Harrison, The Edge, Zoot Horn Rollo, Ali Farka Toure
