An Open Letter to the Governor General of Canada...

The following was sent to Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean (and CC'd to the offices of Jack Layton, Stephane Dion and Gilles Duceppe).

the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean
Governor General of Canada

[email protected]

Dear Ms. Jean,

By way of introduction:

From my father's side of the ancestral tree - I'm a proud descendant of United Empire Loyalist pioneers who helped build this country from the earliest days. Thomas Edison Jr. is among our distant relatives.

On my mother's side - I'm also a proud ancestor of the earliest Newfoundlanders with family lineage dating back to the 16th century.

Throughout my family's history, both sides of our family have sent members to war to fight (and sacrifice their lives) for this country when called upon. My father and I both served in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Born in Alberta, raised in both Ontario and the Maritimes - I'm as much a dyed-in-the-wool Canadian as you're apt to find anywhere.

With that in mind - I'm appalled and sickened by this latest fiasco currently taking place in Ottawa - the attempted takeover of our elected government by this three-party coalition that does not have the best interests of Canadians in mind.

As an educated person who follows politics on a regular basis, I'm duly aware of the terms of the democratic process of this country as outlined in the Constitution...and understand the machinations of the balance of power.

BUT THAT DOES NOT MAKE THIS SITUATION RIGHT.

Although I'm not a gambling man - I would wager heavily that this current political mess is not what our founding forefathers had in mind when they drafted the Constitution. I'm convinced the Constitution was created to bind and strengthen our nation...especially during times of economic crisis and domestic turmoil. Instead, we now find the Constitution being used as a tool of separatists and individuals who's self-interest agenda is to steal leadership from the elected Prime Minister AT ANY COST, regardless of the will of the (voting) people of Canada.

I take pride in both my heritage and my right to vote. My ancestors were among those who made the ultimate sacrifice to provide us with this honour. However, in my view (shared by many fellow Canadians) - this right is being cast aside by this coalition's attempt at a backdoor takeover of the Prime Minister and government I voted for less than two months ago.

In their quest to seize power at all cost, the Liberal and NDP parties have opened the door wide for Duceppe and his fellow separatists in Quebec to irreparably fracture Canada (both politically and geographically)and potentially ruin our great nation.

Is this what our forefather's envisioned for Canada?

NO, I DON'T THINK SO!

I'd like to urge you to consider your options as Governor General with all the wisdom at your disposal, and hope your decisions are made with our country's best interests...and not those of self-serving, power-hungry politicians. I love my country - and I'm deeply saddened by this shameful display by the likes of Mr. Layton, Mr. Dion and Mr. Duceppe.

Sincerely,

##### #. ########

Crickets, no doubt.

I figured we'd had enough Obama/Biden/Palin/McCain buffet on here for so long...time for a Canuck perspective.

And you never know if Michaëlle Jean is an avid lurker of GFY.

I get the reason for the whole "no-confidence" thing to be there.. to have the majority step up and prevent the ones in power to make huge mistakes.

But that's not the case here. Right now, this is simply a power bid and that's just not ok.

Great letter. I agree completely.

I have to say, the people of the US and Canada are too "civilized" these days. If this happened 150 years ago, every single party member of the "coalition" would be hanging from a tree right now.
