I have 2 part time employees who just happen to be uneducated meaning no highschool or G.E.D. that I pay 5 dollars per hour of their work in MY home doing the mundane things I don't have time to do. They are friends who needed the opportunity. I neither berate nor tell them that they are doing "monkey work" which imo sounds as racist as "cooley labor" . They know it, I know it but it is unspoken and certainly not the pitch I used to get them working for me. In fact I got quite a lot of free "help" from many people friends and other with a little thing called "respect" no matter their situation. As said by others it's hard to believe you came from nothing with such thought of those less fortunate than you.

However even if the employee is ever grateful for the opportunity, as soon as a new and better one (even extremely marginally better) comes along they will bolt. That's why McDonalds doesn't retain 16 year olds. That's why sales reps move around 6 times. People appreciate it and then fuck off. It's normal.

As an employer you have to go above and beyond to offer the WORTHWHILE employees the perks that keep them around. Obviously you will have turn over no matter what your business or approach. But even the woman with 3 kids who will suck your balls for the job will bitch and talk behind your back to her family and be looking for something else while writing your blog updates.
