Anyone that knows the general cost of hardware for laptops..HELP
I don't know how the hell I did it, prob. from transporting it back and forth from my place to my bf's, but all 4 of my usb ports on my Toshiba laptop or smooshed down--nothing fits in any of them (2 on each side).
Would it most likely be cheaper to buy a new one instead of paying someone to look at it and the parts/labor to install the new ones? BTW, still selling that 17 inch HP laptop for 100-150 bucks if anyone wants it. Missing 2 keys but you can still type.

So it sounds like a new laptop would be cheaper/faster? Are those no-name lappies any good? can anyone recommend a fairly fast but cheaper one? Times are tight and I can't drop another 2k on one, I'd like to spend under 800 if thats even possible

You can get a decent laptop for $800. Probably won't be the sturdiest thing around, but it will work fine if you don't travel too much or bring it places.
As for the USB ports on a laptop, they are almost invariably part of the motherboard. You would have to replace the motherboard to fix them. The part itself is usually ~$100-150 depending on age of the laptop (used on ebay), but it's a chore to install. Find a local geek to do it for free for you and it may make sense to get repaired. Lord knows I get roped into doing this crap for family all the time :/ -Phil

Y not take a screw driver or pliers and fix it yourself? It's not rocket science.

It depends. Lol seriously. If the USB ports are on the motherboard it would cost more to fix than it is worth for sure. If they are some little peripheral thing you might be able to get a replacement on ebay for $40 and put it in yourself.
If someone provides the part and takes it apart for you then you will be paying close to what most laptops are probably worth ($300 ish). If that is your only option I think SmokeytheBear has posted the appropriate course of action ;)

Get an external plug in card that has additional usb ports. Use those until you wear them out.

That was in my thread. If it is a basic laptop and hell better than the one I am using now for everyday applications. Dell has them on sale right now new starting at around 480.00 with free shipping. Of course I am not talking about what I am looking for for video editing, but just comparing to what I am currently using and have been using for past couple years. Works fine with all webmaster tasks from basic editing to photoshop etc.
