1 simple SEO question for Wordpress - no fools please

A post has the potential to show up on 3 pages- homepage, caegory page, and single post page. Actually, if it is is more than one category then it would be on even more pages but that is entirely optional.

You write your content on the homepage and you use the seo all on one plugin or something similar to change the post enough so that you hope you don't suffer from the duplicate content penalty (title, meta, h2). Ok, which page do you make those changes to and which do you put in the robots.txt?

I'm leaning toward putting the category pages in the robots.txt and using the single post page to add depth(pages) to the site even though they probably wont get much SE traffic.

lol you don't get a duplicate content penalty on your blog because a post shows up on multiple pages within your site. at least its never affected mine.

btw a post can show up on more pages than that. you're forgetting about tags as well.

You don't change the individual posts across your blog.

Like was mentioned earlier, just no index the duplicate entries.

And yes, google still does have a problem with some sites having multiple copies of the same page so it's best to handle that to avoid problems.

I had not noticed that. Thanks for pointing it out. I don't currently use it but it seems they have answered the question for me.

I disagree with you. The penalty for duplicate content can vary. If its on the same domain it is often the nicer penalty where google merely ignores every instance but 1. Maybe that is why you havent noticed.

Nigga please. Just because you have a successful blog network doesn't mean you know it all.

no doubt.. just the method i use doesn't seem to get penalized. i have many first page terms making sales everyday without doing anything to my blogs. other than adding a sitemap generator, using good keyword density on titles/posts, and a few minor template changes.

i guess if you had a massive blog some of what you guys are talking about would factor in. just not for what i do.

The last wordpress site I had, I used uncategorized and I was #2-#5 search result on google for 3 terms within 3 weeks. And to be honest I had the same meta tags on every page...I had not done the SEO for the site yet because I had only just set it up.

I'd say categorization is okay but only put it in one category. That way it does show up on the homepage and in the categories but it drops off the home page quickly and I don't believe there is much penalty for this.

I will use categories because surfers might want to browse in that way, but I will keep them from being indexed. It shouldn't matter.

If I have those categories noindexed do I need to bother with making the links nofollow? I don't want to leak PR to a page that will never exist in Google lol.

I think duplicate content penalty applies to same pages across multiple class C and domains. For instance, parking pages.

Yes, the penalty for that seems to be much worse than what I posted above.
