Kan. suspends income tax refunds, may miss payroll

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? Kansas is suspending income tax refunds and may not be able to pay its employees on time.

The state is strapped for cash in its main budget account. Republican legislative leaders on Monday blocked an effort by Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to transfer funds into the account.

Sebelius wanted to move $225 million from other accounts throughout state government, allowing the state to pay its bills.

Now Budget Director Duane Goossen says he's not sure the state can meet its payroll. State employees are to be paid again Friday.

Goossen says the state stopped processing income tax refunds last week.

GOP leaders want Sebelius to sign a bill making $326 million in adjustments to the budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30.

So...some people in Kansas got tax refunds (those who filed early enough) - the remainder won't?

Wow!

Shining example of the early bird gets the worm, eh.

Smells like pending litigation I'd say. If I was among those who won't be getting a tax refund from the gov't - I'd be looking into my legal rights.

If you are late paying your taxes to the government they charge you interest. These people getting IOUs in California and late payments (hopefully) in Kansas sure as fuck better be getting paid INTEREST!

The omission of the word "refunds" in the topic title makes it sound like a good thing... until you start reading the messages, anyway.

There are several sad things about this.

1. Kansas is a red state and always has been. Man, just look what them republicans are doing to thank them.

2. The only news sources I can find on this story so far are small or in/from Kansas. Its as if another state on the brink of bankruptcy isn't really news. Oh... but that chimp the police had to shoot sure is all over the place.

3. I am surprised at some of the responses in this thread. The same old finger pointing, the same old party line squabbling, etc. It is moronic... A nation divided against itself can never be united.

It is time to get over ourselves. Local governments, unable to support its citizens is no laughing matter nor the time for sophomoric ideals or games. A national government unable to regulate itself, let alone for the good of the people, is a government waiting to have its coffin closed.

I hear all these people talking and bitching about change and why isn't Obama doing anything? Where is this "Change You Can Believe In"? Look at yourselves in the mirror, are you changing anything or is the only change you want the kind someone else takes care of. Because if you want someone else to change things for you then you will have to settle with what you're given.

The politicans are suppossed to be working for us, not against us. Something is and has been seriously failing. We are becoming a nation of sheep, constantly distracted as we wait our place in line for the slaughter like good little citizens. Everyone is going to feel this one before it is all over, maybe it isn't near you yet, but it will be.
