DRM and porn sites?

Why are site owners worried about DRM, when I was a surfer I had no problem with DRM - it was completely transparent and never bothered me.

What are your thoughts on this?

Again I am sorry for a on topic thread here!

well as someone who has done a lot of customer support for sites using DRM on their movies i must admit that the majority doesnt have a problem getting the DRM to work - but sadly the few that does are very often beyound any kind of technical help you can provide by email so that ofcourse piss them off and you loose them as a customer..

Due to the whole way we have "spoiled" the surfers by allowing them to download and keep everything once their membership ran out most surfers really hated DRM due to the fact that they couldnt continue to enjoy the movies once their membership was over...

Review sites, or the honest ones at least, then took it upon themselves to lable sites that used DRM as "lesser quality sites" and wether or not you used DRM quickly became a marketing point... So as an industry we buckled under the preasure from the surfers and review sites and opted to go with what we knew and continued to spoil the surfers..

granted microblah stopped supporting their own DRM system when they launched the Zune player and left a lot of DRM developers wondering if they wasted the last couple of years of their life working on systems that used DRM... and ofcourse with the whole fiasco of the Vista system DRM is now more or less dead and everyone and their sister is removing it from their content wether it be hustler or the music industry as a whole..

Was a hassle sometimes with some users and site owners decided not worth it and instead not worried about users sharing it with friends...the damage vs. sales lost due to inconvienence was not worth it...just what most people agreed on....might be different from today prospective.

Ill be offering a streaming solution and should have a release about it within the next 2 weeks. Protected streams that can't be ripped, and have measures to prevent screen capture recording. Those who want to talk directly can email me at [email protected]

I know its definitely possible to prevent screen capturing. Programs like PwerDVd won't allow screen capping....it just shows up as a blank image. The only option would be to actually record the screen with a video camera.

DRM is still interesting for some scenarios, such as renting. For owned content I understand customers worries. I would not buy a movie if it was DRM enabled.

Yes, aiming for next week sometime, but could be week after. For those wanting to get ahead of the release you can hit me up at [email protected] for now. Have a site specificly for the release, but don't want to release that till Im ready. In midst of moving to a new house first of next month, and things are going to be busy for a bit here.

If people want in early can get somethings worked out ahead of time, demo's viewed etc. Been many many that have seen the demo for what we can do. I've been way to free with the consulting side of things and am not giving away info for free anymore. Site is up now, but not releasing quite yet.

We sold Microsoft DRM solution for all most 6 years and last week the last customer to use DRM pulled out (of course we stop selling few years back but kept on supporting it).

The problem is Microsoft's fault in my view. The thing worked on 95% of the computers and the 5% who could not get it working were the vocal majority which basically led web masters not to promote sites that used DRM, review sites to give low marks to sites that used DRM, and things got bad went guys who were doing 'installs' were using DRM as a backdoor to get into users computers.

Right now Microsoft has a new DRM solution for Silverlight, they want 30K per server plus per lic issue fees. I doubt if any one will use it even though its a lot stable then the older version of DRM.

Also DRM has become a mute point since any one with half a brain can brake it. Their is no DRM system that is 100% fool proof.

How'd DRM work for the music industry? There's a reason why they don't use it anymore. now if the movie and TV industry would get thier head sout of thier asses they might actually make some money.

Thats totally different, they downloaded and moved files around.

Surfers want to click it, then watch it. They dont care if its a flash stream or what it is, as long as they can click and view.

Might as well just do streaming video, a lot less compatibility issues. Although bandwidth usage might be totally ridiculous. Too many people share stolen content and it's getting worse and worse everyday. I promote very unique fetish sites and I'm finding more links spread all over the fucking net with stolen links. It's so bad you do a search on google and bam there is a whole site rip right below the damn paysite. I'm getting ready to launch my first paysite in the next few months and I still haven't decided which route to go.

Except now ISPs in the US are implimenting caps. Usually with huge overage fees of $1. $1.50 per GB. So now in addition to the monthly membership there is potentialy an additional cost to viewing stream. At least with a download is counts ONCE against my cap and if I want to see it again I'm doing it from my HDD. So if people are going to get socked with caps then you need to provide more value to the customers.

How much bandwidth does it take to stream a flash video vs to download a decent quality AVI file? It's a good thing porn is usually a impulse buy. You get a boner and you aren't thinking about overage fees, or what the hell DRM is. I guess it depends on what you're promoting though. The best no brain sales come from solo girl sites with brand new hot girls, or rare fetishes. When you get into DVD collections, pornstars that are everywhere, etc is when people start reading review sites, and start "shopping around".

Proper streaming uses the same OR LIKELY LESS bandwidth than downloads. Ours is setup we are only charged for what is "viewed" not the full video. The user can scrub anywhere in the video at any time. Backwards forwards and there is no buffering. Instant viewing.
