Advices for Membership site CMS

Hi everybody,
I searched in the last posts but I didn't find definitive answers to this:
What are the most used CMS for building a typical membership site ? What do you use ? I've heard about Awiz. Does anybady use it?
What would you give as advice for a starting point?
I'm a webmaster, I've got programming skills in PHP/MySQL but I'd rather use a tested and ready-to-use product and I'm quite new to adult sites.
Thanks a lot for your advices

Hey. I would also use elevatesx, as it is one of the best systems around. Lots of people use it and love it, and will tell you the same.

If you do go with it, and want it skinned, please let me know.

See my signature for my site and info.

Good luck either way.

Awiz is ok but not the most user friendly script to use (lots of users complain that the instructions are not as clear as they should be due to the poorly written English). The support guy is helpful however the English issue unfortunately raises it`s head again.

But no denying it can work well and is great value for money.

Their was a guy here a week or two back offering a Wordpress option that I believe was intended for members areas. Do a search.

If you're serious about your business there's only one system to look at.

Elevated X has already been mentioned here but don't take our word for it, do your own research. Do a gfy search for CMS related threads over the past year or so and see which system is recommended the most by actual users.

Feel free to email, ICQ or give me a call at 800-690-9277 and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about our system. building and running pay sites and content management systems in general

check out ADULTSITECMS

Amazing things can be done using Word Press for way less that other products ( and with way more flexibility).

I've built custom, used MAS, and ElevatedX. My favorite is none of the above - they all have their good side, and their bad. I'll wrap it up here:

Custom:
Pros:
It's custom
Cons:
It's custom

MAS:
Pros:
Templating is easy
Importing is easy
Adding new network sites is easy
Cons:
No automatic transcoding
Shared-ID sites for import; content rotation only works partially with this heirarchy.

ElevatedX:
Pros:
Transcodes formats, provided you have it all setup
Support and updates are generally fairly painless
Cons:
XSLT. Templating this to most people is like overhauling their engine. It's not for the faint of heart, takes forever, and quite frankly, is a pain in the ass.

Here is the answer from aWIZ customer:

i bought AWIZ deluxe on wednesday night, its been installed on my server on thursday morning and meanwhile i had the VERY COMPLETE AND WELL WRITTEN IN GOOD ENGLISH manual to read like 30 minutes after my payment.
I'm pretty pleased and impressed sofar with the script and i must admit that all the criticism i read on GFY about it being hard to use and the "broken english " is totally unfounded and must have been made by idiots who cannot alter their mindsets to try to understand "becouse" instead of "because".....

Touchy touchy.

You need to understand that lots of people being critical about your manual does actually mean something. The comment from me was not an isolated one...plenty of people have made similar observations.

Perhaps you should learn to take constructive criticism and work with it instead of telling me to update my knowledge about your product.

You`re a fucking asshole. We purchased your product a long time ago and this is how you think it is necessary to speak about paying clients?

Perhaps you should have had a decent manual when you launched the product several years ago instead of something that was so bad, my worker had to dump the product.

People have complained about the templating. We listened. This will be changed shortly.

We expect you to be pleased with the decision we've made for the new non-XSL templating system and look forward to your next critique which should look something like this:

Elevated X:
Pros:
Transcodes formats, provided you have it all setup
Support and updates are generally fairly painless
Highly customizable and easy to template

Cons: Zero

Thank you. Your boorish answer prove absence of any arguments besides your memoirs what was years ago.
Thus I hope the question of so-called "bad manual" at last is cleared and closed for any clever reader.

I've been using AWIZ for several years and love it. I'm starting more paysites on a different server and looked at all the alternative CMS's and found AWIZ does just about everything the other CMS's do at a fraction of the price, plus it's a one off payment - no monthy commitment. So I got a second copy

Support is very fast and competent and the new version 6 manual was written by native English speakers and is easy to understand.

Nata25: To add content with Awiz can I just copy it into the content directory from another place on my server? Or does it have to be uploaded.

I have an existing site with all the content already on my server.

Thanks.

It`s amazing how you even refuse to accept that the manual was a load of shit. It took you several years to change it. A smart man would have took that on board at a far earlier stage. Instead you wash over the complaints and state that the fault is with the users.

I stated that the product was good, just the manual was shit. You seem to think it is clever being critical of the previous buyers when they speak truthfully.

Silly man.

Shoplifter seems recently you told that you don't need aWIZ and have chosen different CMS?...

I'm not sure what difference you mean between "copy content" and "upload content". In any case, aWIZ doesn't require to upload the content through the panel - the script works with the sets/folders which already are on the FTP. Such sets may be added to the script one by one by filling details of each set in the "Add set" form, OR the group of sets may be added at once by importing the list of their data through the "Bulk import" form (it is in Setup-panel).
All these forms you can see in the admin-panel's demo on aWIZ website:
http://v6.awizsoft.com/demo.php

Not yet. The latest release is still using the XSL.

We're expecting the new template system to be available by July 1st and will provide the templates to anyone who wants to switch to them.

Keep an eye on the boards as you already do. We'll make announcements once it's ready

We coded our own database system for the first site. We couldn't find any CMS that would take content from the members area and use it in the tour like we wanted it to.

But I have another site that is more of a picture site and it already has all the content uploaded to the server. So I am looking for a CMS that can read the picture directories off of the server and import it that way. I'm seriously considering Awiz, it seems to be a simple solution for this.

I'm going to read through your forum and see if I can get the answers I am looking for there. I'm also curious about your Crazymailer and how it works.

Damn even with the half fucked up manual it wasn't hard to understand it... Some people shouldn't even be webmasters! *shrugs* I love awiz and have used them for a few years, I have tired several others and I have not found anything better then awiz! But this is my exp with it!

ps... when I did have a problem I would email them and blam within an hour they had it fixed or recoded!

Sitedepth wasn't happy with, it was and is buggy as hell.. ole well.

just my two cents!

I grabbed a copy of awiz 2 or so weeks ago. Got the newset version. Here is my take on the software:

Pros:
1. no monthly fee
2. price is less then most setup fees
3. the manual i got was perfect english.
4. lots of nice fetures in the newest version
5. templates seem to be pretty easy to work with
6. did i mention no monthly fee ;)

cons:
1. does not automatically transcode videos so you have to upload all formats which is a pain.

I have only played with it for a few weeks still maping stuff out and trying to absorb all the info in the manuel. But for the price if your on a budget it might me a good start point.

yuo can do transcoding, cropping and manipulation with ffmpeg, however it's weird that a CMS doesn't include that by default nowadays

anyway, you only need something like this:

Code:
$ ffmpeg -i video.mpg -ar 22050 video.flv
that will force not only the transcoding to flv, but the sound bitrate as well since ffmpeg only use 3 audio bitrates by default

do you want cropping?

Code:
$ ffmpeg -i video.mpg -croptop 20 -cropbottom 20 -padcolor 000000 -target flv -aspect 16:9 video.flv
you can also take previews, make time based virtual clips and such.

However, as I said, IMHO this should be included by default in any CMS
