.vob 2 .wmv ?
Im just looking to give advice someone on the following matter, but, too advise them based upon the wealth of knowledge that is GFY... As opposed to just giving an answer based upon my own personal opinion...
Client has lots of scenes he has shot, but due to previous advice, regarding his selling the scenes as 'proper' DVD's... Leading to his instructing his editor as such... Hence... All scenes are now currently residing on his PC... In .VOB format.... They need to be converted to WMV... For easy web download. So... whats the best CONVERSION program for him to use? Hes not the most tech savvy. (Hence him using an 'outside' editor) but hes not stupid either... So, It doesn't need to be 'Free' (Nessacerally) but theres little point in suggesting Adobe Premier CS3... As it could well prove not only to costly... But too complicated as well... Normally I would have answered 'Xilisoft'... But.. Thats what I would have said around a year or so ago... So, with tech advances. What current (& Reasonably priced) & SIMPLE program, could I recommend he buy, in order to be able to convert .VOB to .WMV? |

try renaming .vob to .mpg
that should make things a bit easier... you can always use free ffmpeg from command line ffmpeg -i src.mpg -vcodec wmv2 dst.wmv maybee need some tweaking, but it should be it...

There are many ways to do this and many of them will give you mediocre quality WMVs. If you want the best quality with WMVs that look closest to the VOBs here is my method:
DVD Decrypter or other app --> makes usually four VOBs on your hdd --> import them into DVD2AVI --> outputs lots of VERY large, very high resolution DV AVI files on your hard drive + one wav file for the DVD's audio --> import AVIs and wav into an editing app like Premiere Pro or Vegas so you can add disclaimer, logos, edit for content or to fade out between DVD scenes cleanly etc if you desire -> output to one DV AVI -> then import that edited DV AVI into your preferred WMV encoding app like Videocharge or Sorenson Squeeze and encode to WMV.
