Video editing on a Mac...help
Hi people,
anyone doing videoediting on a Mac? I have a pre intel G5 machine dualcore 2 ghz, with 2Gb ram and was curious to know if it can edit HD quite rapidly. I've tried to paly an HD movie (300Mb) made with a canon 5D and it goes jumping instead to fluently run...horrible! Can you please give me some advices? Better to implement the one I have or better change machine? thanks |

HD video editing is a bitch on even the highest of "high-end" systems.
Unfortunately, your system does not even come close. |

That will be about twice as fast as on your G5
And about 4 times slower then if you were to get an intel 8 core mac desktop |

the intel imac with 2.3g ram handled HD fine editing in final cut, no lag or delay. I did it for a while. Exporting converting and importing files can be real slow though. Rule of thumb daphy, buy the fastest product you can afford. it's only gonna get faster. Good choice in the 5d, now go get the sweetest mac you can buy

Hd editing isn't made for Imac's .. you need a min of 4 gigs of ram to run FCP HD 6.0 or higher

Whatever you do, use Final Cut Pro. Don't settle for shitty video editors.

Final Cut Express is very good, but if you do not have the cash for that IMOVIE HD version 6. ( not 7) is great and for simple chopping and water marking quicktime is a winner.

I am sorry I tried to find Imovie 6 but it is no longer available. Sorry!
You can find the info for water marking in Quicktime Pro here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...8071152AAgFy9C

you can edit or view the 5D footage on FCP on your current system but you need to transcode it to a usable codec. You will lose some image quality. The video feature on a 5D is mostly a novelty since it records in 4:2:0 color space and H.264 If you transcode into another codec you will lose a lot of the ability to color correct and image control. However, if you wish to just view the clip, transcode then set your FCP to dynamic. You should be able to view it without skipping even on your G5, if you add a little more RAM.
