Do you workout your upper body in the water like that often or is this the first time?

Take some pain killers man... It takes at least 3 days to heal completely. I've had it for over a week once.
Not a good week.

Does it hurt when you lay on your back and try to roll to either side (like getting out of bed)? What you've probably done is damaged the cartlidge between the ribs. I've done this several times in martial arts.
This will probably take 4 weeks or slightly longer to completely heal. Each time it's happened to me I trained through it as the pain allowed. That usually meant a week or so of rest followed by light duty training. Take Ibuprofren (600-800mg at a time) and you can alternate heat and cold presses on it. The cold for inflamation, the heat to stimulate blood flow and healing.

Sounds more like DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).
Rest dude, it's been awhile since you used those muscles.

Sounds like you may have overworked your serratus, possibly resulting in a minor tear. I've seen it happen to more than one person (over)doing that same exercise for the first time in a pool; for many people it's one of those underdeveloped muscle groups (like the stabilizer muscles) that are normally rarely used in day-to-day life. Give it a couple of weeks with light duty and you should be fine. Good news though, when the muscle heals it will be stronger than before.

Wrapped a car around a telegraph pole about 30 years ago (safety wasn’t a big seller with cars back then) and pulled my ribs due to bad seat design together with a bad seat belt. It hurt to breathe, cough, fart and walk for about a month before it started to go away.
