another tipping thread.

was watching the morning news and they had a segment on the economy and how it relates to tipping. the no duh aspect was that tipping itself was down along with general numbers of people dining out. they also spoke a bit about how they have to pay a percentage to others, how the majority of their minimum wage goes directly to taxes which was again misleading as it is not that way in every state, nor the majority of states. just a select few east coast states are set up so they only earn minimal wages that would barely cover taxes. most mid west ones earn mid range minimum wages and give up small percentages of tips, and all western states get full minimum wage and no tip percentages.

anyways they were interviewing people, mostly waiters, waitresses, and a dinner or two. several of the dinners said that they can not always afford to leave 15-20 percent so they do their best to leave 10 percent if they can afford it. few waiters/waitresses were all pissy if dinners dared to leave anything less than 15% and 20% should be the norm they were saying and that is the social etiquette amount. yes 20% is supposed to be the norm now and be what is socially proper. did anyone else not get the memo that spoke about it going from 15 to 20 as a normal minimum?
then they had a restaurant owner as well as a miss manners/etiquette woman who both said anything less than 20% all the way down to not tipping, even for sub par service is just like theft. yes leaving less that 20% is like theft, not tipping for poor service is like theft. there suggestion was if you are to poor to not be able to afford 20% that you should order less food, cheaper food, or use coupons/specials so that you can afford it.

The fact that they think they can stick their finger in my drink and spill my food on me and still EXPECT 20% just pisses me off. So I'm a dick and dont go at all. Problem solved.
