I've had good and bad luck with almost every brand. I wish there was a truly reliable brand.

WD here too. Seagate, you better have a good backup. Although with 1TB, you better have a good backup regardless.

I picked up 4 1TB WD Black editions and have had no problems. Before I load them up with anything, I always run a full error check and they've come up clean every time. Back in the summer I picked up two 1TB Seagates because they were on sale and both BRAND NEW were filled with bad sectors, so I returned them within a week.

I've had my Seagate external running for about 2 years now without a hitch, zero noise, not a complaint about em and will be buying a 2nd external in the next few weeks.

I've had a few of these dinosaurs die on me.
I have 2 WD now, 1tb and 500gb, both holding up fine!

Just to give Seagate some needed love...I have all Seagate in my server and 5 systems, all 1 TB, and they all have worked fine for quite some time.
There's no difference in reliability between Seagate and WD.

WD recently released the 2TB Black and 2TB RE4 (not RE4-GP) drives... if you hunt around you might be able to find these somewhere. Both are 7200RPM whereas the Green/RE4-GP ones are 5400RPM. The newer models also have some extra features such as a dual head seek mechanism: this does a coarse seek like a normal drive, then an additional fine seek which can move faster than a full head servo mechanism can.

![]() Some say that infant mortality is a myth but I've had a few drives die within a week. Given the typical expected lifetime of a HD I don't think that 7 days of heavy testing is going to hurt, and if it picks up an early failure then it's definitely a benefit. ![]() |

Brand or model really has nothing to do with failure rates. Anyone with 1TB of data they don't want to lose certainly shouldn't be putting their faith in a brand name.

A particular model may fail faster, which just means you lose your data sooner. ALL drives will fail at some point. Backup, backup, backup. |

Just added the LaCie D2 Quadra 1 Tb external to my G5, I back up my Final Cut exports on it. For my PC's I use WD or Seagate, and no more than 500 Gb yet. Soon.. but not quite yet.
