My parents just got a new Mac for the first time and love it.

They're still in their 50s, so not quite elderly. But definitely not "computer people".

My grandma uses a PC. I'm not sure how much training it took though. She does e-mail, writing, and Scrabble, LOL.

The mac hands down. Their is only a learning curve when moving from a PC to a mac. Those with no computer experience find the mac way of doing things more obvious.

Definitely a Mac, I convinced the parents to switch to Mac 2 years ago.. and the support calls are almost nil. There's just less to go wrong, and they don't have to install anything. Just works right out of the box.

I can't say which one is harder in use because both systems are almost identical (I mean their interface). Even modern Linux systems like Ubuntu will be ok for a person with no experience.

give 'm a linux ( (k)ubuntu or opensuse ) box with restricted rights. Low resources needed, no virus/spyware problems and when rights are set properly, no real fuckups are possible..... set security updates on auto and there you go.
Common tasks are no problem at all these days on linux desktops for noobs

I'd start them out with the tv remote first and see if they can handle that before giving them a computer.

just give them an old George Foreman grill and tell em it's a lap top. By the time they figure out it's not a computer, they'll be headed to the nursing home
