political posturing designed to grab the populist vote at the expense of co-operation in the region..
Its one thing to say you'll stop Australians being the victims of terrorism and quite another to smack the heads of the people who we're relying on to help us not be victims.. without south east asian governmental help we're fucked.. but howard basically threatened their sovereignty for votes.. and at the expense of the very real help we need from them.

He got in by appealing to opinion polls (of largely uninformed middle aged whites), and unfortunately our direction is in concrete.

You know whats funny ... the opposition is afraid to question the goverment's policy because of public perception. We are now in the unique situation where there is only one dominant party headed by a PM who is prepared to do what it takes to enforce his rather bigoted views.

Fuck ... how did that happen? Drinking beer and talking politics. What has happened to me!?
